Most cruisers practice abandoning ship, extinguishing fires, and handling medical emergencies, yet we are far more likely to face self-defense threats than those other situations. So Nicole and I also practice self-defense, building the skills and mindset we will be grateful to have if/when they are needed. In this scenario we deploy a Byrna Mission 4 rifle and Byrna EP pistol against an unwelcome “intruder”, an aggressive “dog,” and stationary “threats” at various distances and directions. We start with the rifle and pistol stowed, incorporating movement, as well as quickly reloading both weapons. When I watch this, I notice a lot that I did “right” including- not muzzle sweeping Nicole, good pistol reload, mostly accurate shots, good verbal challenge, etc. There is a lot I can improve including- rifle was held too low during reload, I took too long to deploy pistol from waist pack, my stance was off balance with pistol, etc. What do you notice I did well? Ketch-up (get it, ketchup like catch-up, or ketch like our boat 😇🤣🍟) with what we’ve been up to. I had extra fun in making this little dispatch 😋 I grew up watching this movie where our family would often quote it and still do. The weather has been pretty stormy for May, but we have been getting the odd dry periods with warm wind here and there. To be honest, the Caribbean is looking pretty good right now. Boat life carries on regardless of how chilly of a spring we’re having. Each week has been bringing us new opportunities for learning more about our boat 😉😉 @wilder85 has been a trooper getting items checked off our list while working and fitting in a paddle or two.
