Learning the current patterns to plan your sail into the harbour is essential, especially if you want to sail up the East River and into the Long Island Sound. Sailing a beautiful high-altitude (8,601 ft elevation) Colorado mountain lake in my 2010 Precision 18 trailer sailer, s/v "Mandatory Fun." Winds were pretty heavy, so I double-reefed the mainsail.
