Doing a rig check before offshore sailing? Here’s how we inspect our rigging before every passage. From the top of the mast, we check for cracked fittings, loose pins, corrosion, and halyard chafe — the small things that can turn into big problems at sea. We use a climbing harness (or a bosun’s chair works too), a figure 8 knot for extra security, and always a backup halyard. Clear communication and double-checking gear are key when one of you is literally hoisting the other up the mast. In May 2019, the 3rd PAPA Regatta took place for the first time in Croatia. Although the weather was unusually cool and overcast for the season, it brought steady winds — ideal conditions for competitive sailing. While there was no time for swimming, no one had to sit idle waiting for the wind either. The action never stopped.
