Join us as we set off on a 5 day adventure to the Sahara Desert. It was touch and go if the authorities would allow us to be in the desert with 37mph winds and sandstorms forecast, but they did, and we experienced everything the desert could throw at us. It even rained, which is pretty unusual, being 13 years since this kind of rain had passed through before. Lessons were learned, one being don’t plan to spend any more than 1 hour maximum on the back of a camel, it is uncomfortable, painful, and definitely not a lot of fun! There is a reason the Bedouins only use these animals for transporting loads! Today we attempt to repair our aft water tank that recently leaked 60lt into the bilges through a small split in the Polyethylene. This is the second failure (the first one was in 2018) when the tank was replaced with a new one. Amazingly the failure in this tank is in exactly the same position as last time, making us believe this is a design fault. Before we go ahead and order a new one, we will attempt to carry out a weld repair, which is notoriously difficult to do without the correct tools and welding sticks. Sailing in the Aeolian islands takes us first to Vulcano, where we climb to the top and get a perfect view of the crater. After spending the winter months safely tied to the dock in Monastir, we really hoped for a leisurely downwind sail to Malta. Wintering in Tunisia turns out to be a lot better than we assumed it would be, with a great liveaboard community and a town that stays open all year round.
