After leaving the anchorage we head between the islands of Kythnos & Kea to be hit with accelerating winds of 41knots (Beware of severe acceleration zones). Our experience from years of sailing in Greece told us to reef early, which once again saved us a lot of stress. Surfing down 3m waves at speeds in excess of 10knots was definitely an adrenalin rush, but one we could have done without! Our destination is the Greek mainland and the anchorage at Pountezeza, where we go ashore to explore and check in. We head over to the port of Lavrion, where we come across a yard full of wind turbines? WOW they are big! Next stop on the journey is further up the coast to the bay of Sounion where we find the famous Temple of Poseidon. It's a short stay as the anchorage is uncomfortable with a constant swell rolling in. Moving on to the bay of Focaia we experience the same swell, so swiftly move on to Varkiza. Leaving the island of Naxos we head to Paros, seeking shelter we drop the anchor in the bay outside the harbour. The harbour is almost empty, and after seeking permission we decide that being moored in there is going to be a safer option, and will allow us to leave the boat and explore this beautiful island. To do our check in we have to take the bus to the port of Parikia where we are fortunate to see the Greek Independence day parade. Have we sailed to an abandoned town?? Deserted and decaying, but isn't this a tourist resort? After arriving in the anchorage at Kamari (Kos)we venture ashore to find the town totally deserted and what looks like abandoned. Nowhere to eat and only one poorly stocked mini market is all we can find, until we come across a lovely café bar serving home baked cakes. Moving on we head up to the island of Kalymnos, initially mooring alongside on the quay, until the harbour master advises us to move further into the port, to get shelter from the 35kts of wind forecast for the following day. Three days is enough in this lovely town, and now we head out and North to Leros, anchoring in the southern bay of Xerokampos. Checking in to Greece can sometimes be a bit of a trial, Symi offers the same with it taking three days to finally get our Transit Log. It wasn't a problem as such just that the customs were only working part time and it is them that need to fill out the relevant paperwork. Once all checked in we hunker down in Panormatis to see out the high winds forecast for the following day. With the winds having moved on so do we, heading up to the beautiful Island of Tilos where we discover it is Greek freedom day when the islands broke free of Turkey. Sailing from Turkey to the Caribbean is something we have been planning for a long time, and now the journey begins. In this episode we finally break ties with Turkey after 18 years and head to Greece for the first step in this adventure. With a favourable forecast, we head out from Mandalya and head to Symi, where we will do our check in. The forecast as usual turns out to be way out and we are hit with 30kts and confused seas, before we finally land on the island of Tilos. Leaving Tilos we have a great sail over to Symi, but the predicted 4 hours sailing turns into 8 hours as once again the forecast is wrong and tacking is the order of the day! After arriving in Cape Verde it's time to reflect and prepare for the next challenge, 200nm passage to Grenada. For this we must provision again, not only for the passage but for time on the expensive islands of the Grenadines. We also need to wash and check for damage on the Gennaker, which we lost in the water previously. The mammoth task of re feeding a Gennaker halyard through the mast proves to be as difficult as it sounds. Crossing the Atlantic via Cape Verde is notorious for heavy seas and strong winds, which can work out to be an advantage. With the second leg of 2000nm to come later this section is a good shakedown for the boat and crew, with any weaknesses showing up and being fixable in Cape Verde. Our first breakdown came progressively and could have been a game changer had we not had the spares available and the knowledge to fix the issue. The auto pilot failed a few days in at the same time the halyard on the Gennaker chafed through and snapped, leaving the whole sail floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Could we retrieve it?? Fishing in this vast ocean can be very fruitful, and the words" FISH ON" became a regular cry from the stern.
