Join us as we set off on a 5 day adventure to the Sahara Desert. It was touch and go if the authorities would allow us to be in the desert with 37mph winds and sandstorms forecast, but they did, and we experienced everything the desert could throw at us. It even rained, which is pretty unusual, being 13 years since this kind of rain had passed through before. Lessons were learned, one being don’t plan to spend any more than 1 hour maximum on the back of a camel, it is uncomfortable, painful, and definitely not a lot of fun! There is a reason the Bedouins only use these animals for transporting loads! Today we attempt to repair our aft water tank that recently leaked 60lt into the bilges through a small split in the Polyethylene. This is the second failure (the first one was in 2018) when the tank was replaced with a new one. Amazingly the failure in this tank is in exactly the same position as last time, making us believe this is a design fault. Before we go ahead and order a new one, we will attempt to carry out a weld repair, which is notoriously difficult to do without the correct tools and welding sticks. After spending the winter months safely tied to the dock in Monastir, we really hoped for a leisurely downwind sail to Malta. After leaving the anchorage we head between the islands of Kythnos & Kea to be hit with accelerating winds of 41knots (Beware of severe acceleration zones). Our experience from years of sailing in Greece told us to reef early, which once again saved us a lot of stress. Surfing down 3m waves at speeds in excess of 10knots was definitely an adrenalin rush, but one we could have done without! Our destination is the Greek mainland and the anchorage at Pountezeza, where we go ashore to explore and check in. We head over to the port of Lavrion, where we come across a yard full of wind turbines… WOW they are big! Next stop on the journey is further up the coast to the bay of Sounion where we find the famous Temple of Poseidon. It’s a short stay as the anchorage is uncomfortable with a constant swell rolling in. Moving on to the bay of Focaia we experience the same swell, so swiftly move on to Varkiza. Leaving the island of Naxos we head to Paros, seeking shelter we drop the anchor in the bay outside the harbour. The harbour is almost empty, and after seeking permission we decide that being moored in there is going to be a safer option, and will allow us to leave the boat and explore this beautiful island. To do our check in we have to take the bus to the port of Parikia where we are fortunate to see the Greek Independence day parade.
