Sailing around the remote Indonesian island of Sulawesi, we rely on satellite imagery to find stunning, safe anchorages. In this episode we do just that with our buddy boaters at an amazing beach where the dense, tropical jungle cascades down the mountainous coast to meet powder white sand, fringed by vivid corals in crystal clear water. For ocean travellers like us, Indonesia is certainly a nation of wonders.
We sail over calm seas to anchor at the town of Raha, Sulawesi in search of ancient caves. Here, hidden amongst the rain forest in the limestone hills of Muna Island, Liangkabori Caves hold a remarkable secret - vivid rock art created three and half to four thousand years ago. Scrambling through narrow into chambers deep underground, we discover ancient paintings, etched and painted in red ochre, depict human figures, animals, and mysterious geometric shapes. As archaeologists continue to study the site, the art reveals a deep cultural connection between past and present, with local traditions still echoing the symbols and stories found on the cave walls. For ocean travellers like us, Indonesia is certainly a nation of wonders.
THIS is why we go sailing. To be all alone and at one with nature in amazing anchorages like the one featured here. We spent days swimming naked, kayaking and exploring tunnels leading to hidden lagoons full of wonder. Floating calmly in warm, crystal-clear waters above pure white sands, brilliant corals and abundant sea life while surrounded by amazing rock formations and lush, tropical jungle with the air filled by birdsong. If this place, hidden away in the Buton Strait of Indonesia isn't Nature's Playground we don't know what is. It was simply our most stunning anchorage EVER! #sulawesiindonesia #nakedinnature
Join us on a unique adventure to Tana Toraja, Indonesia, where the fascinating customs of life and death come together in a truly extraordinary way. In this video, we explore the intricate funeral rituals, traditional ceremonies, and stunning landscapes of this remote region, which is known for its connection to the afterlife. From ancient burial sites to the vibrant culture of the Toraja people, discover a side of Indonesia few travellers ever get to experience. #deathrituals #sulawesiindonesia #tanatoraja
The unique and intricate death customs of Tana Toraja have been celebrated for centuries, making them some of the most complex and expensive funeral traditions in the world. Before Dutch Christian Missionaries arrived, Torajans practiced Animism, the belief that non-human entities possess a spiritual essence. Despite now nominally following other religions, the Torajans still practice their ancient funeral customs which are known to be some of the most elaborate in the world. During their lives, the Torajans work extremely hard to accumulate wealth. But unlike other societies, the Tarajans do not save their money to achieve materialistic status for themselves, rather they save for a good send off in death. In fact, it is the extravagance of their funeral, which marks a family's position in Torajan society. People will live under the same roof as a deceased family member for months or years until the money is in place to pay for their elaborate, ritual funeral. After leaving Our Dreamtime at anchor in Palopo under the watchful eyes of our buddy boaters, Daniel and Emma, we travel over treacherous roads into the highlands of Sulawesi to the town of Rante Pao in the Region of Tana Raja. We've sailed nearly 200 miles and spent hours driving through the mountainous jungle to attend the funeral of someone we don't even know. Why? Because it's Tana Toraja and not just any funeral. In this episode we experience one of these remarkable rituals firsthand before exploring the incredible natural beauty and unique culture of this world famous region of Indonesia. #indonesia #livingdead #deathrituals

We sail 'Our Dreamtime' further north in Indonesia to Bojowe Harbour on the Sulawesi mainland. Here we race to anchor before a fierce monsoonal storm that strikes with big winds and driving rain. Did we make it? Let's call it a draw. We sail to a complex of reefs in remote Sulawesi, Indonesia and discover a great anchorage at a tiny island. Here we are enthusiastically welcomed by the villagers, who tell us we are the very first westerners ever to visit their stunning home. They proudly showed us around their small but truly beautiful island where seaweed farming and fishing are the central way of life. After an all to short stay, we sail further north to Bojowe Harbour on the Sulawesi mainland where we race to anchor before a fierce monsoonal storm that strikes with big winds and driving rain. After sailing to Bira on the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi, we explore the world of the Bugis people, once fearsome pirates and the origin of bogeyman myths, now famous worldwide for their amazing skills handcrafting massive traditional wooden ships The Bugis are the predominate ethnic group on southern peninsula of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and are one of the most skilled and well known sea-faring people in Southeast Asia. Back in the Seventeen Hundreds the scary bogeyman was no myth but very, very real murdering plundering, pillaging pirates creating havoc along the spice routes plied by ships of the Dutch and English colonial companies. "Beware of the bogeyman" was a phrase used to motivate sailors of these colonial traders to be watchful and ever alert. These bogeymen, the Bugis, weren't imaginary ghosts but rather a very real, dangerous threat to ship and crew. The modern day Bugis are no longer fearsome pirates but are still master mariners and skilled ship builders almost totally responsible for Indonesia having the largest fleet of timber cargo ships in the world. In addition to that, there is now an also impressive fleet of traditionally constructed timber sail and motor boats catering for the exploding adventure tourism and live aboard dive markets. Visiting this hub of traditional wooden ship building had been on our bucket list for a very long time and fully lived up to our anticipation.
