Our passage west across the bottom of Sulawesi in Indonesia began beautifully with some great downwind sailing, a peaceful anchorage and a pleasant night passage. That was until our OH CRAP moment. A violent squall appeared out of nowhere in the pre-dawn darkness, smashing our boat from the complete opposite wind direction, tearing our mainsail free of the boom and allowing it to flap crazily amongst the rigging. All right in the middle of a busy shipping lane. In treacherous conditions on deck, it had to be secured fast before it tore itself to pieces. - Not fun! Whether in tiny villages or major cities, the people we’ve encountered in Indonesia have been super friendly, generous and fantastic fun to spend time with. Our sailing adventures in Sulawesi continue as we discovered a blissfully calm and quiet anchorage at Barangka on the island of Buton and had some amazing experiences with the villagers before moving onto the city of Bau Bau where were again embraced by the locals. THEY say you can’t really sail in Indonesia because there’s no wind. This episode shows how much THEY know. We sail, we dodge fisherman, we sail, we dodge barges, including one that was waaay too close for comfort, we sail, we dodge ships, we sail some more and experience three great anchorages in Sulawesi’s Buton Strait on this leg of our way south from Luwuk to Bau Bau. A glimpse from our latest Dreamtime Sail Episode but cruising’s not always blue skies, calm seas and fair winds and that’s certainly not what we got on Our Dreamtime in Sulawesi for this episode. Try sunshine and wind followed by squalls, followed by blue skies and no wind followed by squalls. Welcome to the reality of cruising. Fortunately when we got there, Pulau Labengke once again proved a beautiful, calm and very safe anchorage for us to kick back and relax for a couple of days before pushing further south. We enjoy a very nice upwind sail on flat seas heading south from the Bangai region of Sulawesi in Indonesia. Check out our full Episode 137 to also see how we rely on satellite imaging technology to navigate narrow channels through uncharted Indonesia coral reefs in the Bangai Region of Sulawesi before sailing a hundred miles overnight to a gorgeous lagoon anchorage on the island of Umbelle. We also explain the advantages of our in Leisurefurl in boom furling system and why we love it so much. After all our recent solitude in isolated islands around Northern Sulawesi, we anchored right in the centre of the City of Luwuk and were in for plenty of surprises, meeting other cruising sailors for the first time in months, an unexpected visit from Port Police, and finding hoards of screaming motorcycles racing around the city streets for the annual Bangai Cup. Following three tough days battling an engine breakdown, no wind, too much wind and an incredibly uncomfortable sea state generated by strong counter currents on our way back from the Togean Islands, we were very relieved to be safe in the calm waters of Luwuk Harbour. Now it was time to take a break and enjoy the city. After an outstanding but all too short stay in the Togian Islands of Sulawesi, we reluctantly set off for the first hop of our return trip to Luwuk expecting a typical equatorially windless and therefore boring motor to our next anchorage.
