Sailing from the Togian Islands, we were on a deadline to reach the city of Luwuk in the Bangai Region to extend our Indonesian visas before we could land in deep trouble. So, we were really hoping our previous day’s engine problems wouldn’t resurface. Little did we know we were going to face totally different challenges and experience our toughest, single day passage on Our Dreamtime ever. Sailing around Sulawesi, Indonesia, our engine blew its top, leaving us becalmed and adrift, literally in the middle of nowhere, a hundred and fifty miles from a mechanic. Add in a very tight deadline to extend our Indonesian visas and it’s a case of STRESS LEVEL TEN!. After an outstanding but all too short stay in the Togian Islands of Sulawesi, we reluctantly set off for the first hop of our return trip to Luwuk expecting a typical equatorially windless and therefore boring motor to our next anchorage. In typical Indonesian Bajo style, this Togian Islands community clings onto the small, rocky island with most buildings, including the school, perched on the surrounding reef and over the water.
We find another perfect, tropical lagoon anchorage amongst the reefs of the Togean Islands in Sulawesi, Indonesia. See our full Dreamtime Sail Episode 131 for much more.
We've run up against mother nature at her nastiest, a dangerously exploding volcano? Circumnavigating Sulawesi in Indonesia on our 42 foot sailboat, a lack of wind couldn’t stop us, uncharted coral reefs couldn’t stop us, being rammed by customs officials couldn’t stop us but flowing lava, falling ash and the threat of tsunamis from the erupting Mt Ruang volcano force a seismic change to our sailing plans. In our latest Dreamtime Sail episode we show how we find safe anchorages in uncharted, remote coral reef areas. Sail along with us as we day hop around the eastern peninsular of Central Sulawesi from Luwuk, fighting currents and adverse winds on our way to the Togean Islands. We go into detail on how we select anchorages in remote areas using satellite imagery and onsite dinghy surveys with a hand held depth gauge.

A short peek from our Dreamtime Sail Episode 129 that features incredible anchorages, super friendly locals , the world’s clearest lake at Paisu Pok, a dolphin escort from Pulau Peleng and these spectacular Salodik Waterfalls near Luwuk. It's all in the one video from the unforgettable Banggai Islands and Central Sulawesi.
This lake’s name “Paisu Pok” carries a deep meaning in the local language, believed to translate to “still or dark waters.” This meaning perfectly fits the character of the lake, which radiates peace and tranquility. Paisu Pok Lake is famous for its mesmerizing beauty but also for the serene atmosphere it offers. With its crystal-clear waters, said to be the clearest in the world, and surrounding natural beauty, the lake is unique and, as yet, largely unspoilt. To see more watch our full Dreamtime Sail Episode featuring more of the Banggai Islands of Sulawesi.

THE DRAMATIC YOUTUBE DESCRIPTION SAYS - Sailing to the Banggai Islands in Sulawesi, Indonesia, we’re stranded at sea in the dark with a broken engine, almost run into a huge fishing platform, survive a near miss with a speeding fishing boat, find water flooding into our yacht, suffer expensive gear failure and, after finally making it into port, we get robbed? Nah forget that! THE DREAMTIME SAIL DESCRIPTION SAYS, - It’s a boat and things happen sometimes. No big deal. So ride along with us on our very, very chilled night passage to brilliantly, beautiful Banggai Island. There’s even dolphins. It’s cool. After eleven unforgettable days exploring the remote beauty of Indonesia’s Sombori Islands—home to crystal-clear lagoons, hidden lakes, limestone caves, and pristine white sand beaches—we continue our sailing adventure northward on our circumnavigation of Sulawesi. But before leaving this tropical paradise behind, Karen convinces us to make one final stop at a breathtaking sea cave, and overcomes her fear of hitting the reef to capture stunning footage of the cave itself with our classic ketch, "Our Dreamtime". Join us as we sail through this rarely visited corner of Southeast Asia, sharing the raw beauty, hidden gems, and sailing lifestyle that define off-the-beaten-path cruising in Indonesia. Continuing our circumnavigation of Sulawesi, we sailed from Pulau Labengke hoping to find an anchorage in the Sambori area to spend a couple of nights. What we discovered were spectacular lagoons, vibrant coral reefs, powder sand beaches, stunning limestone caves and the surreal experience of swimming in a land locked lagoon inhabited by thousands of graceful jellyfish with no sting venom after centuries of evolution. Blown away by nothing short of sheer awesomeness, we ended up staying ten days safely anchored in calm waters off the rustic Sombori Resort having one of our most amazing Indonesian experiences of all. Anchored off the south East coast of Sulawesi in a stunning, fiord like bay on the island of Labengke we explore an unspoilt, ecological paradise with mountainous coastline, clothed in thick rain forest, filled with hornbills, kingfishers and scores of other exotic bird species, lapped by crystal clear waters covering beautiful coral reefs, heart shaped bays, blue, blue lagoons, very, very few people and no tourists. We feel so privileged to sail here on Our Dreamtime and experience such pristine natural beauty. If Nirvana exists, this is what it looks like. But this fragile treasure lays across a thin strip of water from death and destruction reigning down on the Sulawesi mainland in the form of unfettered nickel mining, stripping the jungle of all vegetation, laying the hills bare and covered red dust or mud silting the waters with red sediment wiping out all marine life. Could this fate also face unspoilt, pristine Pulau Labengke? The fears of the local people and survey pegs we found throughout the island suggest Yes!
