It is typically made from the fermented sap of coconut or palm trees, and can have an alcohol content ranging from 20% to 50%. Pretty close to rocket fuel. Our latest OH CRAP moment hit us when a violent squall appeared out of nowhere in the darkness smashing our boat from the complete opposite wind direction, tearing our mainsail free of the boom allowing it to flap crazily amongst the rigging in the middle of a busy shipping lane. In treacherous conditions on deck, it had to be secured fast before it tore itself to pieces. What should have been a straightforward sail across the Makassar Strait quickly turned into a struggle against strong currents and rough seas that made for an extremely exhausting and uncomfortable overnight passage aboard SV Our Dreamtime.
