We're in for a surprise when we wake in the morning to leave Excelsior Cove. The boat is aground so we're stuck and not going anywhere for a while. When the tide eventually lifts Our Dreamtime off the seabed, we sail over calm seas to anchor at the town of Raha, Sulawesi in search of ancient civilisation. Here, hidden amongst the rain forest in the limestone hills of Muna Island, Liangkabori Caves hold a remarkable secret - vivid rock art created three and half to four thousand years ago. Scrambling through narrow into chambers deep underground, we discover ancient paintings, etched and painted in red ochre, depict human figures, animals, and mysterious geometric shapes. As archaeologists continue to study the site, the art reveals a deep cultural connection between past and present, with local traditions still echoing the symbols and stories found on the cave walls. We're sailing with friends Daniel and Emma on our our buddy boat Lola B in an area of the huge Indonesian Island of Sulawesi very rarely visited by cruising boats. We've only scratched the surface so far but we're already in love with this amazing area. We sail to a complex of reefs in remote Sulawesi, Indonesia and discover a great anchorage at a tiny island. They proudly showed us around their small but truly beautiful island where seaweed farming and fishing are the central way of life. After an all to short stay, we sail further north to Bojowe Harbour on the Sulawesi mainland where we race to anchor before a fierce monsoonal storm that strikes with big winds and driving rain. There's a first time for everything and before stopping at Pulau Sabalana on our way to Sulawesi, we'd never been chased out of an anchorage with explosives before. When the locals started throwing sticks of dynamite around the boat we got out of there as fast as we could. Isn't it fantastic when a plan works. In this episode we take into account wind, swell, current and weather forecasts plus satellite imagery of potential anchorages before undertaking a 110 nautical mile overnight passage to the remote island of Sapuka Besar as our next step towards Sulawesi. The conditions turned out to be fantastic as we enjoyed our best night sail EVER with every element of our plan working out perfectly. We anchored in beautifully clear water protected by the island and its reefs then received an incredibly warm welcome ashore from the local villagers. We were a little worried when we directed into the Police station by an officer only to be offered cold drinks, coffee and food in another example of the super hospital nature of the Indonesian people. Six months sailing around in Indonesia had flown by and with our 180 day visas fast running out, we were forced to leave the country in order to obtain new visas. This episode covers our extended stay at Gili Asahan in the secret Gili Islands off Lombok's south west coast, an incredible and, as yet, unspoiled corner of the world. We LOVED the place and are really happy with how the episode came together to highlight its beauty and charm. This amazing anchorage was so, so incredible we stayed almost two months and could have happily remained longer. The local community is amazingly welcoming to the visiting yachting fraternity, while our temporary island home was as close to living in paradise as we have found. We know our destination videos often don't rate as well as the more challenging sailing ones or anything with a hint of drama but we personally believe this episode is up amongst our best. We rolled back into Australia five weeks ago for a wedding that was worth every mile and to tackle our 200,000-kilometre health check-ups. Rob zoomed through his appointments like a superstar, racking up gold stars left and right! On the flip side, Karen's journey was a bit more of a rollercoaster. With her medical team working tirelessly to manage her pain from afar, we found ourselves in a bit of a pickle when it came time to leave Malaysia. Surprise! Our first pit stop was the Hospital ER. After a bit of a medical whirlwind, we were back on track! We thought ?.. We've been blessed with an amazing medical crew who were all about getting us back on the boat fit and healthy. But alas, we couldn't check off all of Karen's medical boxes in time. Living the dream isn't without its hiccups! Boat life can throw some curveballs, especially when it comes to health. Staying fit is the name of the game; otherwise, even the tiniest tasks can feel like climbing a mountain. Huge shoutout to our buddy boaters, Daniel and Emma from Lola B, who've swooped in like superheroes when we needed a helping hand! After our encounter with a reef on the island of Sumbawa, we're very happy to be safely on a mooring in Medana Bay Marina on Lombok for a while.
