7 days until I sail alone around the world. 😳 And today we tackled one of the BIG jobs… food. Eight months at sea means a ridiculous amount of it has to somehow fit inside Showgirl. I’ve got some of my favourite gluten-free options from Schär, Food Tactics for those days when cooking is absolutely not happening and I just need something quick and nutritious, and of course my protein powder from Glucose Goddess. Food Force also sent me food, including some non-gluten-free options. Those obviously can’t stay with me, so hopefully some of the other GGR participants will happily give them a home. 😂 And because eight months is a very long time to wonder “Wait… do I still have any of those left?”, everything is going into an Excel sheet so I can keep track of exactly what I have onboard. 9 days. And today Showgirl had her exam. I’ve spent months thinking about this inspection. Every modification, every piece of safety equipment, every stupid little detail that had me wondering, “Is this actually according to the rules?” Today there was nowhere left to hide. 😂 They came onboard, went through the list, checked the boat, checked the equipment, checked things I’ve probably checked myself 700 times by now... And long story short: WE PASSED. ✅ I don't think I realised how much space this inspection was taking up in my head until it was over. There are still things to finish, because apparently my to-do list intends to follow me right up until September 6. But this was a big one. Showgirl has officially been given the thumbs up. Now I can go back to worrying about the other 946 things I need to do before sailing solo around the world. 😂 9 days. Single digits. 10 days. Tomorrow is inspection day, which means today is basically: EVERYTHING. EVERYWHERE. ALL AT ONCE. 😂 Showgirl needs to be ready, everything needs to be where it should be, and hopefully by the end of tomorrow I get the thumbs up to go on this slightly crazy adventure around the world. Today we adjusted the mainsheet so I can control it from both sides, secured the spinnaker poles on deck, installed the boom brake, which I am still figuring out but WILL know how to use properly before I leave 😂, and kept working on the solar panels. And they look SO good. We also cleaned because... wow. The boat was a mess. There are tools everywhere, things moving on and off the boat, jobs being finished and another million things happening around me. But we're getting there. Tomorrow I find out if everything we've been working towards actually ticks all the boxes in that very, very important rule book. So now I cross my fingers, keep working, and hope Showgirl passes her exam. 🤞 10 days until I sail solo, non-stop around the world. 11 days. And today’s very important question is: Where the hell do I put all the food? 😂 I found myself sitting inside one of the port-side lockers thinking, this feels pretty cold… potatoes? Onions? What lives here for the next eight months? My food is coming, which means very soon I have to somehow fit months of supplies into Showgirl while still being able to actually find things once I’m at sea. Meanwhile, the SSB radio needed attention, we found some issues with the antenna, and the clock is very much NOT slowing down for me. In two days I have an inspection, so right now everything needs to be where it should be and working as it should. The last thing my bank account needs after the past few months is a big fine because something isn’t right. 😅 It’s funny how close we are now. I’m about to sail solo, non-stop around the world, and today my brain is occupied by radio antennas and whether potatoes will be happy in a locker. I guess this is what 11 days to go looks like. I finally dare to fly a drone from my boat. 😂 That probably says more about how easy the Antigravity A1 is to fly than anything else. Flying a drone from a moving sailboat has always been one of those things I REALLY don't want to mess up. 😂 But I've finally reached the point where I actually feel comfortable launching the Antigravity A1 from Showgirl. I think this was the week the countdown stopped feeling like a countdown. For so long, the Golden Globe Race has been this thing I’ve been preparing for somewhere in the future. Fix the boat. Find the money. Do the courses. Buy the things. Fix the things I already fixed. 😂 And suddenly everyone is here. The marina is filling up with GGR boats, the other skippers are around, the official programme has started and my calendar seems to have something happening every five minutes. It’s a strange feeling because I still have SO much to do. But at the same time, I’m trying to remind myself that this is it. This is part of it too. These last few weeks surrounded by the people I’ll soon be sailing around the world with, all of us trying to get our boats and ourselves ready for what’s coming. And I actually want to enjoy it. Because very soon the marina, the people, the running around and all this noise will disappear. Then it’s just me and Showgirl. So yes, the to-do list is still terrifying. But this week I’m trying to look up from it every once in a while and realise... I made it here. I’ve spent so long preparing to leave that sometimes I forget I actually have to leave. 😂 Soon there won’t be another job to finish, another thing to order or another problem I can ask someone on the dock to help me solve. Whatever I have when I cross that starting line is what I have. And I think that’s why this first part of the race is going to feel so strange. I’ll be learning what life aboard Showgirl actually feels like when there’s no return date. Finding my rhythm, figuring out when I can sleep, getting used to being completely responsible for every decision again. I know how to sail alone. But this time I’m not crossing an ocean knowing that I’ll be home in a few weeks. I’m starting eight months at sea. Lanzarote is the first little milestone in something ridiculously big. This week felt... weirdly reassuring. 😂 I'm finally back in Les Sables-d'Olonne and honestly, what a breath of fresh air. All the other competitors are arriving, boats are everywhere, everyone is working and, most importantly... I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A RIDICULOUSLY LONG TO-DO LIST. I don't know if I should find that comforting, but I absolutely do. 😂 So this week was another one of those weeks where I worked all day and somehow the boat looked exactly the same at the end of it. Things came off. Other things went on. Things moved into storage. Things came back out of storage because apparently I still need them. And I'm still trying to understand how everything I need for eight months at sea is supposed to physically fit inside Showgirl. But we're getting there. The final four weeks are here now, and there's still A LOT to do. Tomorrow the official GGR programme begins, which means the boat work now has to somehow fit around inspections, briefings, tests, events and everything else that's about to start. So... here we go. Four more weeks of chaos. One month. How did we get here already? I think arriving in France changed something in my head. For months I’ve been running around trying to get Showgirl ready, solving one problem and immediately finding the next one, and the race has always been this thing waiting somewhere in the future. Now I’m here. The other boats are here. The other sailors are here. Everyone is working, fixing things, running around trying to finish their own ridiculous to-do lists… and weirdly, that has made me feel calmer. Maybe because I’m not the only one who isn’t sitting here completely ready with my feet up. 😂 Monday everything officially starts. Checks, inspections, tests, the whole program. And then somehow four weeks later we’re all going to sail away. I’m trying to remind myself to actually enjoy this bit too. I don’t want to spend the next month so focused on getting ready that I completely miss what is happening around me. Because soon enough, all this noise and all these people will disappear. And it’ll just be me and Showgirl for eight months. One tiny month. This is actually happening. 🌊

I am taking a little break from refitting my boat, to rediscover why I love sailing. Together with Sail Norway, I am going to Tromsø in the North of Norway to sail with whales and see the northern lights. Turns out - it was the best Northern Lights I have ever seen in my life.
