50 days. It's funny. People call this a solo race, but I don't think I'd be standing here without the people who've stepped in at exactly the right moments. The last week has been one of the toughest since I arrived in Europe. Every time we fixed one thing, we uncovered something else. There were definitely moments where it felt like the list was only getting longer. But that's also what this countdown is for. Every problem we find now is one less problem to discover thousands of miles from land. I'm incredibly grateful to everyone here in Guernsey who has dropped what they were doing to lend a hand, share their knowledge, or simply remind me that there are still good people everywhere you sail. When you’re preparing for an adventure like the Golden Globe Race, you expect things to go wrong. What you don’t expect is to find them this close to the start. I won’t lie. When we found the crack, my heart sank. Not because I knew what it meant… But because I didn’t. The uncertainty is the hardest part. Right now, I’m waiting for answers. Best-case scenario, it’s cosmetic and we move on. Worst-case scenario, it changes everything. I’ve always promised to share this journey as it really is. Not just the sunsets and dolphins. But also the moments where you question everything, take a deep breath, and keep solving one problem at a time. This race starts long before the starting gun. It starts here. With dirty hands. Hard conversations. Unexpected setbacks. And hundreds of decisions that nobody sees.

53 days to go! A month ago, I thought the hard part was behind me. The boat had a new rig. The plan was simple. A quick sail to Guernsey, install my second Hydrovane, sail back, and spend the final weeks ticking off the last few jobs. Instead, one short sail changed everything. It’s frustrating. It’s expensive. And, if I’m honest, it’s scary. But I’d rather discover these problems now than halfway through the Southern Ocean. People often ask if I’m nervous about sailing solo around the world. The answer is no. What keeps me awake at night is knowing that every bolt, every fitting, every wire, every decision made before the start could make the difference between finishing the race and retiring. The ocean doesn’t care if you’re almost ready. It only cares if you’re ready. So that’s what we’re doing. Fixing everything properly. Testing it again. And making sure Showgirl is a boat I can trust with my life. The countdown hasn’t stopped. Neither have we. 🌊

Last week was a big one. After a lot of late nights, a fair bit of begging, and squeezing everything in before everyone headed off on holiday, we finally got Showgirl back in the water. It felt like a huge milestone. The plan was simple: sail to Guernsey, test the new rig, practise my jury rig, and start building confidence in the boat again. Instead... I came back with more questions than answers. The good news is that the test did exactly what it was supposed to do. It showed me what still needs fixing. The bad news is that I'm not where I want to be yet. Right now, I don't trust the boat enough to take me around the world. And that's a difficult thing to admit. People always ask me what it’s like living on a sailboat. So here’s a tour of my home... While it’s blowing 26 knots outside 😅 A lot of people imagine life at sea as endless sunsets and dolphins. I thought this crossing would be about getting from the Caribbean to France. It wasn’t. It was about learning who I am when things don’t go to plan. There were days with no wind where I drifted in circles. Days with too much wind where I barely slept. Days where the finish line felt like it kept moving further away. Days where I questioned everything. Days where I felt unstoppable. I fixed things. I broke things. I learned things. I learned that I need routine to feel good. Today was a simple day. I cooked, I sailed, and I watched dolphins. I decided to try making pain au chocolat in my Omnia oven, and I may have just discovered a game changer for the Golden Globe Race. They definitely don’t look bakery-perfect, and there’s room for improvement, but they were absolutely delicious. Honestly, being able to bake fresh pastries in the middle of the ocean feels a little ridiculous. And then came the dolphins. So many dolphins. Jumping, surfing the bow wave, swimming alongside the boat as if they had somewhere important to be. One of those moments that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you stop whatever you’re doing. It wasn’t an exciting day. It wasn’t a challenging day. It was just a really good day. And right now, that’s exactly what I wanted. France is getting closer, the final stretch is here, and soon it will be time to focus on the starting line. Day 11. Today was kind of lucky and kind of unlucky at the same time. We were quite slow overnight, which normally would’ve been frustrating… but it actually turned into a blessing in disguise. Because it meant I reached the Bay of Biscay traffic zone later than expected and could go through it during daylight instead of at night. And honestly, that made a huge difference mentally. I got decent sleep, could actually see what was around me, and didn’t have to spend the entire night stressed about traffic. What’s funny though is how massive the ocean still feels. On the AIS there are boats everywhere, but in reality, I barely actually see anyone. Most of the boats never came close enough to matter. We all just kind of slipped perfectly around each other without anyone needing to change course. Which honestly felt pretty cool. I did run into the charging issue again though, the same one I’ve had before. Luckily I now know how to work around it, so it wasn’t a huge problem today. But it is still a bit concerning long term, because if this keeps happening during the GGR, I’ll probably need to make some changes to the system. But honestly, one of the funniest parts of this whole journey is waking up every morning and realizing the community has created something new while I was asleep. Today I woke up and realized… apparently I now have a cat named Windy. Somehow my tiller got a name. There’s lore. There are ongoing jokes. There’s apparently a whole parade happening onboard half the time. I’m always the last one to know what’s going on in my own community. But it honestly makes me so happy. People are so invested in this journey and they keep adding their own little stories and characters into it, and somehow it’s become this giant shared adventure instead of just me alone on a boat. Day 10. Pretty darn good day today. The wind finally came back, which immediately made me feel like a sailor again instead of just floating around out here waiting. The boat is moving properly, we’re making progress, and everything just feels better when the sails are full. One thing that keeps making me realize how lucky I am is the amazing chat following along. It’s honestly ridiculous. Sometimes I’ll go to sleep and if I slowly drift too far off course, someone will message me saying, “hey… maybe turn back a little.” Like… who even has a support system like that? I’m definitely getting spoiled by it, and I think I’ll need some kind of rehab before the GGR because obviously that won’t be possible there. But for now, I’m just incredibly grateful for it. And another big thing… I’m officially entering the Bay of Biscay. Which feels crazy. I’m so close now I can almost smell France. Actually, no. I can’t smell anything. Still just smells like boat. Day 9 at sea. 🌊 Today has been a calmer day, and the wind is supposed to die completely later, so I’ve been taking the chance to get some things done onboard. Cooked some food for the next days and finally started tackling the mess inside the boat… which I really don’t enjoy doing, but at some point it simply has to happen. One thing that has made life a lot easier out here is the salt water pump I installed in the sink. I use seawater to wash the dishes and only rinse the stainless steel utensils with fresh water afterwards. Small things like that make a huge difference when you live on a boat for weeks. Later in the day I noticed the autopilot wasn’t behaving properly. Since I’m getting closer to France now, I would very much like the boat to keep going in a straight line without me having to hand steer all the way there. So… out came the drill. I drilled a hole and added a pin to try to stabilize the handle a bit more and improve the steering. Very scientific boat engineering happening out here. Overall though, it’s been a really good day.
