It's only two weeks in and Mara is already considering quitting. After passing the first checkpoint in Lanzarote, she felt like now the race was *actually* starting. It's week two of the Golden Globe Race and the reality is starting to sink in a bit. Why am I sailing solo around the world? And why is sharing this adventure on social media so important to me? There’s a lot more behind this journey than simply completing the Golden Globe Race. From the beginning, one of my biggest motivations has been to inspire other women and girls, especially younger generations, to believe they can follow their dreams, take on challenges and enter spaces where women are still underrepresented. I grew up surrounded by strong women who inspired me to become who I am today. I want to be that person for someone else, too. And that's where social media comes in. For me, sharing this adventure is just as important as sailing it. I want people to experience the journey with me, learn about sailing, see the challenges, the mistakes, the incredible moments and everything in between. Because inspiring others has always been part of the purpose. In this video, I explain why I chose this challenge, what I hope to achieve and why being able to share the experience means so much to me. This conversation was recorded before the recent discussions surrounding the Golden Globe Race and social media. It wasn't made in response to any publication or criticism. But given those discussions, my team and I thought it was important to share my perspective and give everyone the opportunity to understand the bigger picture. When you're sailing around the world without GPS, knowing where you are becomes a little more complicated. One of the methods Mara uses is called dead reckoning. It's a traditional navigation technique where you estimate your current position based on your last known position, the direction you've been sailing, your speed and how much time has passed. Basically, figuring out where you SHOULD be, based on how you've been moving. But here's the interesting part. Mara actually trusts her dead reckoning more than her celestial navigation calculations! 😂 Why? Because when taking measurements with a sextant, it's surprisingly easy to make a small mistake that can throw off the final position. With dead reckoning, she's constantly following Showgirl's movements and building a picture of where she believes she is. And so far? She hasn't been wrong! 👀 Of course, neither method is perfect, especially when currents and wind can push the boat off course. But that's part of the challenge of the Golden Globe Race. No GPS telling you exactly where you are. Just traditional navigation, experience and a lot of trust in your own abilities. Something is coming. I just don't know exactly when. The barometer has been dropping, which is never a particularly comforting sign when you're alone in the middle of the Atlantic. And to make things more interesting, my satellite phone has stopped working. 😅 I've been trying to stay clear of the developing storm, but out here, the weather doesn't always follow the plan. The next few days could get interesting. Let's see how things develop and whether Showgirl and I manage to stay out of the worst of it. Fingers crossed! 🤞⛵ *** This update is from Day 21. I might never take them off. 😂 As a Norwegian, I like to think I know a thing or two about good wool, and this is exactly what I want with me at sea. High-quality merino wool that keeps me warm, feels incredibly soft against my skin and is comfortable enough to wear day after day. And when you’re sailing around the world and basically living in the same few clothes… that matters A LOT. 😅 For the next eight months, I can’t exactly stop somewhere and pick up something warmer or more comfortable. What I brought with me is what I have. So choosing clothes that I can trust, that keep me warm and that I actually WANT to wear every day was incredibly important. And I think bringing these with me might have been one of my best clothing decisions for this adventure. ❤️⛵ Thank you Henri-Lloyd for keeping me warm and comfortable all the way around the world.

Five weeks later, I wasn’t sure I wanted it to end. Somewhere in the middle of more than 4,000 nautical miles alone at sea, something changed. I stopped simply trying to complete my qualification and started genuinely loving the life I had out there. The routines became normal. I trusted Showgirl more. I trusted myself more. But I think I came away with something much more important than a qualification. I left wondering whether I could spend eight months alone at sea. I arrived knowing that I could.
