I thought this crossing would be about getting from the Caribbean to France. It wasn’t. It was about learning who I am when things don’t go to plan. There were days with no wind where I drifted in circles. Days with too much wind where I barely slept. Days where the finish line felt like it kept moving further away. Days where I questioned everything. Days where I felt unstoppable. I fixed things. I broke things. I learned things. I learned that I need routine to feel good. That a dance party can completely change a bad day. That morale matters just as much as weather. That chocolate croissants taste even better in the middle of the ocean. And that dolphins can instantly improve your mood. I learned to trust myself more. Not because everything went smoothly, but because it didn’t. The biggest change isn’t in my sailing skills. It’s in my confidence. A few months ago, crossing an ocean solo still felt like something I was trying to prove I could do. Now it feels like something I do. And I think that’s the biggest gift this journey has given me. The Golden Globe Race is now less than 100 days away. There is still a mountain of work ahead. The boat isn’t ready. The paperwork isn’t done. The systems need testing. The list somehow gets longer every day. But mentally? I feel more ready than ever. This crossing didn’t just bring me to France. Today was a simple day. I cooked, I sailed, and I watched dolphins. I decided to try making pain au chocolat in my Omnia oven, and I may have just discovered a game changer for the Golden Globe Race. They definitely don’t look bakery-perfect, and there’s room for improvement, but they were absolutely delicious. Honestly, being able to bake fresh pastries in the middle of the ocean feels a little ridiculous. And then came the dolphins. So many dolphins. Jumping, surfing the bow wave, swimming alongside the boat as if they had somewhere important to be. One of those moments that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you stop whatever you’re doing. It wasn’t an exciting day. It wasn’t a challenging day. It was just a really good day. And right now, that’s exactly what I wanted. France is getting closer, the final stretch is here, and soon it will be time to focus on the starting line. Day 11. Today was kind of lucky and kind of unlucky at the same time. We were quite slow overnight, which normally would’ve been frustrating… but it actually turned into a blessing in disguise. Because it meant I reached the Bay of Biscay traffic zone later than expected and could go through it during daylight instead of at night. And honestly, that made a huge difference mentally. I got decent sleep, could actually see what was around me, and didn’t have to spend the entire night stressed about traffic. What’s funny though is how massive the ocean still feels. On the AIS there are boats everywhere, but in reality, I barely actually see anyone. Most of the boats never came close enough to matter. We all just kind of slipped perfectly around each other without anyone needing to change course. Which honestly felt pretty cool. I did run into the charging issue again though, the same one I’ve had before. Luckily I now know how to work around it, so it wasn’t a huge problem today. But it is still a bit concerning long term, because if this keeps happening during the GGR, I’ll probably need to make some changes to the system. But honestly, one of the funniest parts of this whole journey is waking up every morning and realizing the community has created something new while I was asleep. Today I woke up and realized… apparently I now have a cat named Windy. Somehow my tiller got a name. There’s lore. There are ongoing jokes. There’s apparently a whole parade happening onboard half the time. I’m always the last one to know what’s going on in my own community. But it honestly makes me so happy. People are so invested in this journey and they keep adding their own little stories and characters into it, and somehow it’s become this giant shared adventure instead of just me alone on a boat. Day 10. Pretty darn good day today. The wind finally came back, which immediately made me feel like a sailor again instead of just floating around out here waiting. The boat is moving properly, we’re making progress, and everything just feels better when the sails are full. One thing that keeps making me realize how lucky I am is the amazing chat following along. It’s honestly ridiculous. Sometimes I’ll go to sleep and if I slowly drift too far off course, someone will message me saying, “hey… maybe turn back a little.” Like… who even has a support system like that? I’m definitely getting spoiled by it, and I think I’ll need some kind of rehab before the GGR because obviously that won’t be possible there. But for now, I’m just incredibly grateful for it. And another big thing… I’m officially entering the Bay of Biscay. Which feels crazy. I’m so close now I can almost smell France. Actually, no. I can’t smell anything. Still just smells like boat. Day 9 at sea. 🌊 Today has been a calmer day, and the wind is supposed to die completely later, so I’ve been taking the chance to get some things done onboard. Cooked some food for the next days and finally started tackling the mess inside the boat… which I really don’t enjoy doing, but at some point it simply has to happen. One thing that has made life a lot easier out here is the salt water pump I installed in the sink. I use seawater to wash the dishes and only rinse the stainless steel utensils with fresh water afterwards. Small things like that make a huge difference when you live on a boat for weeks. Later in the day I noticed the autopilot wasn’t behaving properly. Since I’m getting closer to France now, I would very much like the boat to keep going in a straight line without me having to hand steer all the way there. So… out came the drill. I drilled a hole and added a pin to try to stabilize the handle a bit more and improve the steering. Very scientific boat engineering happening out here. Overall though, it’s been a really good day. Day 7 at sea. Today was one of those days where you learn an important lesson. I woke up to my AIS alarm going off and ran outside to see a boat way too close for comfort. Big waves, strong winds, dark conditions… not exactly the kind of thing you want to wake up to half asleep. I called them on the radio straight away to make sure we both knew where the other one was and what we were doing. In the end, I changed course to avoid any risk of collision. And honestly, it shook me a bit. One thing I’m really realizing out here is how vulnerable you are as a small boat. Even if you technically have right of way, that doesn’t mean the other boat sees you properly. And it definitely doesn’t guarantee they’ll follow the rules. What frustrated me most was that they never called me. If they had called and said, “Hey, we’re struggling to see you, what’s your plan?” that would’ve been completely different. But there was nothing. And if my AIS alarm hadn’t woken me up… this could have gone very differently. So today made me very grateful for that alarm system. But it was also a reminder that just because other boats have professional crews onboard, it doesn’t automatically mean everything is under control. People make mistakes. People miss things. And it also reminded me of my own responsibility out here. I’m sailing solo. I am vulnerable. If something happens, I’m the one in trouble. And technically, I’m supposed to keep watch at all times… but at some point, I also need to sleep. This time, everything turned out okay. Day 6 at sea. Day 2 of getting ripped at sea. I’ve continued with my workout program and focusing properly on my nutrition, and honestly, I’m finding the whole thing really interesting. On my previous crossing, I tracked what I ate, but more just in quantity. This time I’m actually tracking calories and paying attention to the nutritional side of it all, making sure I’m getting enough protein and eating in a way that makes me feel good. And one thing that surprised me is how many calories I actually need out here. My first thought was that I should need way less because technically I spend more time sitting or lying down than I would on land. But then I started thinking about how your body is always working at sea. Even when I’m resting, my body is constantly stabilizing itself, adjusting to movement, stopping myself from falling over, reacting to every wave and motion. And I think that constant engagement changes way more than you realize. So weirdly enough, the amount I need to eat is actually pretty similar to land life. Sometimes maybe even more. Which I honestly found fascinating. Other than that, it’s been a pretty normal day at sea. I experimented a bit with food and ended up making some absolutely amazing desserts. Healthy, high protein, actually delicious. Day 4. A very different day from yesterday. The conditions were still good, the boat was sailing beautifully under the triple headsail setup, and honestly, everything should have felt amazing. But my body had other plans. I get affected a lot by low pressure systems, and when the pressure drops, I often get migraines. So the entire day was basically spent dealing with that. I was also just tired. Even though yesterday wasn’t physically exhausting, sailing still takes energy in a different way than life on land does. I never sleep quite as deeply out here, and I think it all just caught up with me. So today became a very slow day. Most of the time I was just lying inside on the couch with a headache, waiting for it to pass. Not exactly the dreamy sailing day you imagine when you picture crossing oceans. But honestly, I’m very grateful the weather was calm. Because it gave me the space to slow down, focus on myself, and just recover a little bit. Day 2. Today the trip took a completely different turn. When I left Horta, I was very locked into this mindset of: either I go to France, or I don’t leave at all. Those were the only two options in my head. But then, out here sailing, I suddenly realized something very obvious: there are islands everywhere around me. Just because I left doesn’t mean I can’t stop somewhere. And with the wind forecast dying completely, my options were basically to drift slowly in the middle of nowhere for two days… or go explore an island. The second I realized that was actually an option, something shifted in my brain. So I turned toward Terceira. And honestly, I’m so unbelievably happy that I did. Because today reminded me why I love sailing so much in the first place. Not the miles. Not the goals. Not the schedules. But the freedom of it. The fact that you can wake up one morning and decide to go somewhere else. That the ocean can suddenly open doors you weren’t planning to walk through. I think after the Atlantic crossing I got a bit stuck in “transport mode.” Just get from A to B. Keep moving. Keep progressing. And today reminded me that sailing is so much more than that. It’s arriving in places you never expected. Meeting people you would never otherwise meet. Being welcomed with open arms by a sailing club on a random island in the Atlantic. It reminded me that this lifestyle is not just about crossing oceans. It’s about what happens along the way. After three weeks at sea, some things just feel… different. Have you ever been in a situation where you suddenly can’t do something, and then it becomes the thing you want more than anything? That’s what sailing does to you. I’m normally not even a big fan of running, but out there all I could think about was how badly I wanted to move my body properly again. To walk. To run. To stretch without falling over. So arriving in Horta felt amazing for so many reasons. We went for walks, runs, proper workouts. And honestly, it felt incredible. Funny how quickly normal things become luxuries out there. And Horta itself was such a cool experience. It’s truly a sailor town. You can feel it everywhere. We went to Peter Café Sport, painted our logo on the harbor wall like sailors have done for years, and just got to experience all those little traditions you hear about before arriving. Super grateful we made it there. Finally made it to land… which honestly just meant the work started 😅 First mission: deal with the yankee. The damn thing almost came loose during the crossing and then decided to become an absolute nightmare to remove. The struggle was very real. After that, it was the usual post-crossing routine: clean the boat, provisioning, laundry, fixing all the little things that broke along the way, and eating as much land food as possible before leaving again. It was a short stop, but definitely not a relaxing one. And with the next weather window opening, it was time to leave again. So off I went, heading towards France, leaving Gabi behind on land (which she was VERY happy about 😅). And once again… just me and the ocean.
