After more than a week stuck waiting on repairs, our boat is finally back in action! We move back aboard, leave Koh Samui behind, and set sail for Koh Phangan — home of Thailand’s famous Full Moon Party. It wasn’t a Full Moon Party night, but we anchored right in the same beautiful bay where all the action happens. After everything we’ve been through with the boat, it felt great to finally be sailing again. We spent the afternoon swimming in the crystal-clear water before heading ashore for dinner, drinks, and an incredible fire show right on the beach. Our boat problems continue in Thailand! After replacing the generator control unit, we were hoping our problems were finally solved… unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. With more repairs needed, we pack our bags and leave the boat yet again, checking back into an Airbnb while the technicians try to figure out what’s going wrong. Since there’s not much we can do but wait, Nika and I rent another scooter and head out to explore the island. This time we find an absolutely beautiful waterfall and get some incredible photos along the way. Then we finally get some news about the boat — both good and bad. The good news is that we can move back aboard and start using the boat again. The bad news? We’ve had a battery failure, which means we’re now operating with only HALF of our original battery capacity. After everything that’s happened, it’s definitely disappointing to have another major component fail. But after spending so much time living in Airbnbs instead of on our new boat, we’re just happy to finally be back aboard and moving forward again. Our boat is broken… again. So while we wait for repairs, we grab an Airbnb on Koh Samui, rent a motorbike, and set out to explore the island. That’s when we discover The Xperience — and I honestly don’t know how to describe this place. It’s basically a giant adult playground filled with crazy art, trippy displays, hidden rooms and surprises, bizarre installations, and even moving dinosaurs. Everywhere you look there’s something strange or unexpected to discover. And then the sun goes down… The LEDs, black lights, and glowing artwork come alive and the entire place transforms. It feels like stepping into some combination of a music festival, Alice in Wonderland, and another planet. Definitely one of the coolest and most unusual places we’ve ever stumbled across while traveling. Boat problems have changed our plans once again! With the boat needing repairs, we move into an Airbnb on Koh Samui for a few days and decide that if we're going to be stuck on land… we might as well make the most of it! We rent a motorbike and set off to explore the island, including a stop at an awesome petting zoo where the meerkats apparently decide we're part of the exhibit and climb all over us. 😂 Then we experience another side of Thailand with a night at the Muay Thai fights before heading back to check on the boat and hopefully get back out on the water. Unfortunately, the news isn't good. There are even more problems, and the boat is going to be unusable for at least another four or five days. So it's back to another Airbnb and Plan B — enjoying everything Koh Samui has to offer! Our time cruising Thailand takes another unexpected turn. Before leaving the boat, Nika decides to enjoy one last swim off the back — and apparently swimsuits are optional. Then it’s time for me to leave Thailand for a quick visa run to Singapore while Nika and the dogs move into an Airbnb on Koh Samui. I fly out, reset my visa, and make it back to Thailand ready to get aboard and continue sailing. Unfortunately, the boat has other plans. The manufacturer had already made one repair, but shortly after we return, another failure leaves us without a working generator or propulsion system. With the boat unable to move and more repairs needed, we’re forced to pack up again and head back to another Airbnb while the manufacturer tries to get everything working. After spending a few nights anchored off the beautiful island of Koh Tao, it was time to continue south toward Koh Samui. We had a great sail down, found a mooring for the boat, and prepared to move ashore for a few days. My Thai visa was about to expire, which meant I needed to make a quick flight to Singapore and return to Thailand. I didn’t want to leave Nika alone on the boat while I was gone, so we found an Airbnb on Koh Samui and moved onto land. After a great couple of nights in Hua Hin, we continued sailing south through the Gulf of Thailand. The first day couldn’t have gone much better—we found a quiet village, went ashore for dinner, and gave the dogs some time to explore. But the next morning, things started going wrong. Our generator developed problems, which meant we could no longer recharge the boat’s batteries as they continued to drain. We had to change course and find somewhere calm and protected where we could troubleshoot the electrical system. Fortunately, the bay we pulled into turned out to be one of the most beautiful places we’ve found in Thailand. It was absolute paradise—but even in paradise, the boat still needed to be fixed. This is the reality of cruising: incredible destinations, unexpected problems, and constantly adapting when things don’t go according to plan. We were the only sailboat anchored off the beautiful coastal town of Hua Hin, Thailand, and it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. We took the dinghy to the beach, then headed up the mountain to explore an incredible Buddhist temple with amazing views over the coastline. There were monkeys everywhere, beautiful architecture, and some of the best scenery we have seen in Thailand. Afterward, we stopped for lunch at a beachfront restaurant before heading back into town that evening to explore the Hua Hin night market. We ate dinner, did some shopping, and finished the night watching a live band play. This was one of those perfect cruising days—beautiful scenery, great food, local culture, and an anchorage all to ourselves. For the first time in a long time, I’m sailing toward a destination I’ve never visited before. We finally leave Pattaya behind and point the new yacht across the Gulf of Thailand for a 50-mile passage to Hua Hin. The forecast looked manageable, but the wind was stronger than expected, leaving us beating into the wind and waves for much of the journey. It was a rough ride, but nobody got seasick—and new crew member Nika handled her first real passage incredibly well. Then, about an hour before reaching Hua Hin, the generator unexpectedly shut down. We still had battery power, so we continued safely to the anchorage, but without the generator, we had no way to recharge the yacht’s electrical system. Once anchored, I start working through the problem to find out what happened, why it happened, and whether I can get it running again. This was not how I expected this sailing trip to end. After finally getting the yacht back out on the water, I had to return to the marina because my health issues were getting too serious to ignore. I’ve been dealing with blood clots and thrombosis in my abdomen, and it was time to go to the hospital to find out what is really going on. In this episode, I bring the boat back, head in for more tests, and try to get answers about what’s happening inside my body — and whether I’ll be able to return to normal activity, sailing, and life on the water. We sailed from Koh Larn to Koh Man Wichai, a beautiful island near Pattaya, Thailand, to join a beach cleanup organized by Ocean Marina. The place was absolutely gorgeous, but like so many remote islands, plastic and trash had washed up on shore. Together with the group, we helped haul off around 50 bags of plastic and garbage from the beach. It was hot, sweaty work, but totally worth it to help clean up such an incredible place. Of course, once the work was done, the water was too clear and beautiful to resist. Elissa cooled off in the ocean, played on the beach, and enjoyed a perfect bikini beach day in Thailand. After that, we sailed on to another island, took the dogs ashore for a beach walk, and ended the day with a great meal back on the boat. It was one of those perfect cruising days: sailing, beautiful islands, good people, good food, and doing a little something to help keep paradise clean. After a week away, the yacht finally returns to Ocean Marina after the delivery crew completed the long run down to Malaysia to export and re-import the boat. It was a necessary trip to reset the paperwork, but now the boat is back where she belongs — and we are one step closer to cruising full time. I film the delivery crew bringing her back into the marina, then we get ready for one more weekend shakedown cruise before officially setting off on the next chapter. We also welcome new crew member Elissa aboard, and together we sail out to the beautiful resort island of Koh Larn. This was not the plan. A new crew member arrived in Thailand, and normally that would mean we’re getting ready to go sailing on the new yacht. But because of my recent illness and more hospital visits, I had to stay behind in Pattaya. So instead of me taking the boat, Olivia took over. She joined a delivery crew and sailed my new yacht all the way from Pattaya down to Malaysia so we could clear the export from Thailand, then re-import the boat under a tourist import. It’s one of those unglamorous but necessary parts of owning a boat overseas — paperwork, borders, customs, and a whole lot of miles. Meanwhile, I’m stuck on land trying to figure out what’s going on with my health and when I’ll be able to get back to sailing. Not exactly the adventure I had planned… but the boat still had to move. After finishing the shakedown cruise on my new yacht, we pulled back into the marina thinking the hard part was behind us. But shortly after, I started having serious GI problems and ended up making an emergency trip to the ER in Thailand. What followed was a scary few days of blood tests, an ultrasound, CT scan, and endoscopy as doctors tried to figure out what was going on. For a while, there was real concern that it could be something as serious as cancer. Thankfully, we were able to rule that out. At this point, doctors don’t believe it is pancreatitis either. What they did find were clots and thrombosis in some major abdominal veins, and we’re still waiting on more answers about what caused it and what the long-term prognosis will be. This isn’t the episode I expected to make after finally getting the new yacht, but it’s part of the journey, and I wanted to share what’s been happening behind the scenes. It’s the final day of the shakedown cruise on my new yacht, and we sail back toward Ocean Marina after a few incredible days out on the water. The boat has been amazing, the dogs have loved it, and this was supposed to be the simple final leg back to the marina. But once we got back, everything changed. I had a major health scare and ended up going to the hospital. At this point, we still don’t know exactly what’s going on, but the doctors are looking at some very serious possibilities, including pancreatitis or cancer. Day three of our shakedown cruise on my new yacht started anchored off Koh Larn, but we decided to sail about 15 miles west to the uninhabited island of Koh Phai. This turned out to be exactly the kind of place I dreamed about when buying this boat — white sand beaches, beautiful clear water, the dogs running around on shore, and a peaceful anchorage all to ourselves. After taking the pups to the beach, we headed back to the boat and inflated a huge floating island off the stern. The dogs, Olivia, and I spent the afternoon lounging in the water before taking the Highfield dinghy around the island to explore. We found a few makeshift beach lounge areas that looked like spots where tour operators bring guests during the day, but by the time we were there, the island felt completely empty. To finish off the day, I cooked Olivia a steak dinner onboard — not a bad way to spend day three on the new yacht. Thanks for watching Sailing Doodles! Our second day cruising around the Thai islands on my new sailing catamaran started at anchor on the north end of Koh Larn. By 8 a.m., the peaceful anchorage was already filling up with tour boats and jet skis, and it was getting pretty uncomfortable. But before we could escape to the quieter side of the island, I had an electrical problem to figure out. The batteries were showing a much higher load than they should have, the charger wasn’t keeping up, and I couldn’t figure out where all the extra power was going. Luckily, we had plenty of solar helping supplement the system. After chasing the electric gremlin for a while, we pulled anchor and sailed around to the east side of Koh Larn, where we found a much more peaceful anchorage near town. There was even a floating dock, which made it easy to take the dinghy ashore, walk the dogs, and find a great little waterfront spot for lunch. Back on the boat, I tried out my brand-new eFoil for the first time, Olivia took the paddleboard out, and we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon before heading back into town for an amazing dinner on the water. It was another beautiful day cruising Thailand on the new catamaran — even if the boat still has a few mysteries to solve.
