It’s the final day of the shakedown cruise on my new yacht, and we sail back toward Ocean Marina after a few incredible days out on the water. The boat has been amazing, the dogs have loved it, and this was supposed to be the simple final leg back to the marina. But once we got back, everything changed. I had a major health scare and ended up going to the hospital. At this point, we still don’t know exactly what’s going on, but the doctors are looking at some very serious possibilities, including pancreatitis or cancer. Day three of our shakedown cruise on my new yacht started anchored off Koh Larn, but we decided to sail about 15 miles west to the uninhabited island of Koh Phai. This turned out to be exactly the kind of place I dreamed about when buying this boat — white sand beaches, beautiful clear water, the dogs running around on shore, and a peaceful anchorage all to ourselves. After taking the pups to the beach, we headed back to the boat and inflated a huge floating island off the stern. The dogs, Olivia, and I spent the afternoon lounging in the water before taking the Highfield dinghy around the island to explore. We found a few makeshift beach lounge areas that looked like spots where tour operators bring guests during the day, but by the time we were there, the island felt completely empty. Our second day cruising around the Thai islands on my new sailing catamaran started at anchor on the north end of Koh Larn. By 8 a.m., the peaceful anchorage was already filling up with tour boats and jet skis, and it was getting pretty uncomfortable. But before we could escape to the quieter side of the island, I had an electrical problem to figure out. The batteries were showing a much higher load than they should have, the charger wasn’t keeping up, and I couldn’t figure out where all the extra power was going. Luckily, we had plenty of solar helping supplement the system. After chasing the electric gremlin for a while, we pulled anchor and sailed around to the east side of Koh Larn, where we found a much more peaceful anchorage near town. There was even a floating dock, which made it easy to take the dinghy ashore, walk the dogs, and find a great little waterfront spot for lunch. Back on the boat, I tried out my brand-new eFoil for the first time, Olivia took the paddleboard out, and we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon before heading back into town for an amazing dinner on the water. After years of waiting, delays, setbacks, and one very long journey to get here, my new yacht is finally mine! I signed the paperwork the day before, and now it is time to take her out for our first real sail and shakedown cruise. I was definitely a little nervous pulling out of the slip and leaving the marina, but once we raised the sails, the nerves faded and the dream finally started to feel real. We sailed over to Koh Larn, popped a bottle of champagne, poured a little out for Neptune, and dropped anchor in a busy bay full of tour boats and jet skis. By evening, things calmed down, so we lowered the new Highfield dinghy, took the dogs ashore for a beach walk, Olivia went for a swim, and we had dinner on the beach… until a rainstorm forced us to take shelter. Before I officially take possession of my new yacht, we head out for some of the final sea trials to track down a strange noise coming from the electric drive system. The issue seems to be somewhere around the Python drive, CV joint, electric motor, and prop shaft. We try several different adjustments and manage to reduce the noise quite a bit, but we still can’t quite get it completely solved. After the sea trial, I also give a full rundown of the electric drive system, including the motor setup, drive batteries, house battery bank, and the components that make this electric catamaran work. After months of waiting, my new catamaran finally leaves the dock for her first sail and sea trial! We start the day getting off the dock and heading out for the yacht’s first real test on the water. Before putting her fully through her paces, we sail over to the lee of an island to test the anchor, lower the Highfield dinghy, and take it for a quick run. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Sailing Doodles sea trial without a little chaos — Cougar decides to jump off the dinghy into the water, and I have to turn around to rescue him. Then it’s time for the big moment: we pull up the anchor, roll out the sails, and see how this new production catamaran actually performs. I was honestly really happy with the results. We managed 6.8 knots of boat speed in 11.7 knots of wind, which is about half wind speed — pretty impressive for a production cruising catamaran. After years of waiting, delays, factory visits, road transport, crane lifts, final checks, and a whole lot of stress… my new Island Spirit 525e catamaran is finally going in the water! This is one of the biggest moments of the entire build. Launching a brand-new yacht is exciting, but it is also extremely nerve-wracking. One wrong move with the travel lift, straps, rudders, keels, or hull could cause major damage before the boat even gets a chance to sail. In this episode, we watch the final preparations, lift the boat, move her into position, and finally launch her for the first time. But just as everything is happening, we have to stop the process quickly when one of the lift straps gets caught near the rudder. After months of waiting, my brand new Island Spirit catamaran has finally made it from the factory to the marina! The boat was trucked 38 kilometers down the road, and now the real work begins. In this episode, we watch the crew carefully unload the yacht from the truck, move it into position at the marina, glue the keels into place with hydraulic presses, step the mast with a crane, and lift the hardtop into place. After years of waiting, delays, damage, insurance drama, and a full yacht build in Thailand, my new Island Spirit catamaran is finally scheduled to leave the factory. But before the yacht can be moved, I head to the factory for one final walkthrough and approval. The crew also gives the boat a traditional Buddhist blessing with incense, fireworks, offerings, and a full ceremony to bring good luck before she hits the road. Then later that night, the real drama begins. A road delivery crew loads the yacht onto a massive hydraulic trailer and starts the 36km journey to the marina. Getting this 52-foot catamaran out of the factory is incredibly tight, and at one point we have less than two inches of height clearance. I got some incredible drone footage as the boat slowly makes its way through the narrow streets of Thailand. I met Olivia on Bumble, and she was supposed to fly home to Poland today… but somehow I talked her into skipping her flight and coming sailing with me instead. My new Island Spirit 525 electric catamaran is finally getting close to leaving the factory! In this episode, I head back to the Island Spirit factory in Thailand to check on the progress of my boat build, and it looks like we are only about 12 days away from getting her out of the factory. We spent our last day aboard the Island Spirit 525e charter boat, making the most of a beautiful day on the water before sailing her back to the marina. We hit the beach, enjoyed one last cruise, and the girls soaked up the sun before heading home. But after the fun was over, I had to share some disappointing news: my new Island Spirit 525e build has been delayed yet again. I don’t have a firm delivery timeline yet, but it’s looking like it could be a while before my boat is finally ready. It’s frustrating, but that’s part of the adventure. In this episode of Sailing Doodles, we explore some of the most famous spots in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand. We’re still a few weeks away from my own Island Spirit 525 being ready, so instead of sitting around waiting, we head to Phuket and jump aboard Island Spirit 525 Hull 4 for an amazing sailing adventure. In this video, I give you a full tour of the boat so you can see what this new 525 is all about while we wait on my own Hull 5. Then my new crew and I leave the dock, hoist the sails, and head out into the beautiful waters around Phuket. Our destination is the incredible overwater village of Koh Panyi, a truly unique place built almost entirely on stilts over the water. It’s one of the coolest spots in Thailand, and getting there by catamaran makes it even better. This was a great chance to get a feel for the Island Spirit 525 before mine is finally finished. After two nights at anchor at Koh Sichang near Pattaya, we pull up anchor and sail back toward mainland Thailand. Just south of Pattaya, we find a beautiful anchorage and head ashore, only to discover we’ve landed in the middle of an unexpected powerboat race with multiple classes and divisions. It was an awesome surprise and something we definitely didn’t expect to see on this sailing trip. The next morning, we set sail for Monkey Island (Koh Ped / Koh Ling), hoping to catch the monkeys down on the beach before heading back to Pattaya and the marina. This one had a little bit of everything: island anchoring, sailing in the Gulf of Thailand, local boating culture, and a fun stop at one of the most popular islands near Pattaya. After a peaceful night at anchor off Koh Larn, we woke up to the bay filling with jet skis and tour boats, so it was time to move on. Unfortunately, I was already feeling terrible from something I ate the night before. We got the boat underway and made the 10-mile run north to Koh Sichang, a much more industrial island with a completely different vibe. Chloe, the dogs, and I made it ashore for lunch, but I was still feeling too rough to do much exploring. So Chloe grabbed the camera and took over, giving you a tour of Koh Sichang, including one of the island’s beautiful temples, while I headed back to the boat to recover.
