Episode 33: YACHTS TRAPPED IN GRENADA — and nearly six months later, a simple chicken fence is still stopping cruisers from getting their boats back into the water. In Episode 33 of What The Hell Am I Doing, I investigate the extraordinary dispute at a boatyard in Tyrell Bay, Carriacou, Grenada, where foreign sailors say their yachts — and in some cases their homes — have been trapped on land after a fence was erected across the boatyard. We look at the decade-long land ownership battle, the Grenadian court cases, the Corion family, the boatyard operators, claims that yacht owners were warned before the fence went up, allegations of racism, and what the trapped cruisers themselves say actually happened. Most importantly: if the yacht owners had nothing to do with the land dispute, why are THEIR boats still trapped? I also look at who may be responsible for the cruisers’ mounting losses, why the situation could damage Carriacou and Grenada’s reputation within the international sailing community, and why Grenadian authorities — right up to Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell — have so far been unable to find a way to temporarily open one fence and launch the boats.
