From Headhunters to Master Artists: The Secrets of Telina Island 🪓 Deep in the Marovo Lagoon lies Telina Island, a place world-renowned for its craftsmanship, but built upon a fierce and shadowed history. In this episode, we step off the boat and into a living museum. We begin by deconstructing the Tomoko—the traditional war canoe. Adorned with shell inlays and spiritual totems, these vessels were designed for both protection and psychological warfare. We learn how ancient warriors used conch shells to synchronize their pace and strike fear into their enemies. But the real magic happens in the hands of the local artisans. Using nothing but basic manual tools, the carvers of Telina produce work that is arguably the best in the world. We were invited into a custom-built display home to witness these masterpieces firsthand, alongside intricate hand-woven baskets and fans that carry the legacy of generations. Finally, we trek up the mountain with our guide, Vyno, to stand where his ancestors stood. We explore the "Hidden Caves"—fortresses tucked into the cliffs where tribes lived in secrecy during the headhunting era. It is a hauntingly beautiful look at how a new belief system transformed a culture of war into a culture of world-class art and peace.
