The waves are big, the swell comes from seemingly random directions and the weather is completely unpredictable. All that adds up to a lot of stress for sailors and wear and tear on the boat. For our passage from Chagos to the Seychelles we were in the unfortunate position of having to sail to a schedule. We'd waited for a good weather window as long as we could and when we finally got one, we set sail. Things looked good until the wind unexpectedly died and stayed dead. That meant we had to motor. A LOT. But we didn't have enough diesel to make it all the way to the Seychelles. Not a good feeling! Somehow we managed to sail just enough to arrive in the quarantine zone in the Seychelles and get cleared in. But when we fired up the engines to go to the fuel dock, they sputtered and died.
