Warped Cylinder Head: How to Fix It | S2 Ep 51
In this episode we get some local professional Volvo mechanics onboard and finally get to the bottom of our engine issues. We start by checking the valves and compression testing the engine. A bad compression test meant we had to take the head off and found we'd a blown gasket and warped head. A warped engine cylinder head refers to a condition where the cylinder head of an engine becomes distorted or bent, usually due to excessive heat. The cylinder head sits on top of the engine block and contains critical components like the valves and injectors. In our case this was caused by a broken water pump which cause our engine to overheat and our overheating alarm system wasn't working properly. Overheating is the most common cause of a warped cylinder head. When the engine gets too hot, the metal of the cylinder head expands unevenly, leading to distortion or warping. When the head warps, it can cause several issues within the engine. It can prevent the cylinder head from making a proper seal with the engine block, leading to a loss of compression in the cylinders. This can cause poor engine performance, difficulty starting the engine, or misfiring. The most common method for fixing a warped cylinder head is to machine it. This involves using a specialized machine (a surface grinder or a milling machine) to remove a small amount of material from the head's mating surface, making it perfectly flat again. This smoothes out the warped surface so that it can form a proper seal again with the head gasket Cylinder heads can only be machined a certain number before the head becomes too thin. In severe cases, if the head is too damaged, it may need to be replaced entirely. 00:00 Intro 00:35 Tuning the valves 02:15 Compression test 03:50 Discussion of potential problems 06:51 Removing the head of the engine 12:08 Checking the pistons and rings 12:43 Checking compression 13:18 How to fix a warped cylinder head 13:38 Summary of findings 14:58 Clean and check engine block 16:39 Conclusion -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you'd like to support us on Patreon, our website https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv or if you'd like to help us buy something we need, you can check out our amazon wish list https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1G2NJ0EGJLKR0?ref_=wl_share #boatrepair #boatlife #sailingnv
