@boatfools #herreshoff #classicsailboat #Sailboattour #sailing #fiberglasssailboat At first glance, GALATEA looks like the kind of classic wooden yacht that belongs to another era. Look again. This remarkable 38-foot Herreshoff-designed cruising sailboat combines the unmistakable lines, bronze hardware, teak decks, varnished Sitka spruce spars and traditional craftsmanship of a classic yacht with something you might not expect: a composite fiberglass hull with an Airex core. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro 00:44 What is a Molly's Cove 38? 02:58 Up On The Bow 08:20 The Cockpit 14:00 The Interior! 17:32 The Galley 18:52 The V-Berth 20:32 The Head 22:38 The Yanmar Diesel 24:40 Final Thoughts On This Beauty! GALATEA traces her lineage to legendary yacht designer L. Francis Herreshoff and his 1947 ketch NEREIA. Built by Molly's Cove Boat Works in 1985, GALATEA is an adaptation of that design, incorporating a counter stern inspired by Herreshoff's other clipper-bowed vessels. And if she reminds you a little of the legendary TICONDEROGA, you're not imagining things. But GALATEA isn't simply a beautiful old sailboat. Her current owner has cared for and continually improved her for 30 years, with an extensive list of upgrades and refit work completed over the years at respected Maine yards including Wayfarer Marine in Camden, Johanson Boatworks in Rockland and Rockport Marine. Among the improvements are a 50 HP Yanmar diesel, rebuilt in 2018, updated electronics, complete rewiring, electric windlass, newer teak decks, custom mahogany butterfly hatch, wheel steering, refrigeration, upgraded galley, solar panels and an extraordinary collection of custom teak and bronze details. Below decks, she's every bit as distinctive. GALATEA features a classic Herreshoff-style interior with white bulkheads, varnished woodwork, teak-and-holly sole, bronze opening ports, a wood-burning stove, generous storage and accommodations designed for comfortable cruising for four. This is one of those boats that makes you stop walking down the dock. She's traditional without being entirely traditional. She's fiberglass without looking remotely like the typical fiberglass production sailboat. And she carries the DNA of one of America's most celebrated yacht designers. So what exactly is GALATEA? Come aboard with BoatFools Sailing as we tour this unusual 1985 Herreshoff Nereia-inspired 38-footer and take a closer look at a classic sailboat that isn't quite what it appears to be. Would you rather own a traditional wooden classic—or something like GALATEA that gives you much of the character without the wooden hull? Let us know in the comments.
