The Curse of Hendrick van der Decken  Before the Flying Dutchman became one of the most enduring legends of the sea, there was its captain: Hendrick van der Decken. Proud, experienced, and unwilling to yield, he tried to force his ship around the Cape in a violent storm. When he swore by all the devils in Hell that he would make the passage even if it took until Judgment Day, the oath became his curse. The storm was bound to his ship.
