We anchor off the coast of Smeerenburg, the legendary "Blubber Town" of Svalbard, and head ashore-where we're greeted by a group of massive walruses lounging on the beach! Smeerenburg is located on the island of Amsterdamøya and was once the bustling hub for Dutch whalers in the 17th century. Though abandoned around 1640, you can still see the remains of houses, try-pots for whale oil, and even old graves. The name comes from the Dutch word smeer, meaning lard or blubber-a nod to the town's once-thriving whale oil industry. ?? Welcome aboard Bushpoint Sailing! Hi from Jeanette & Fredrik ??!
