NYYC American Magic AC40-5 Day 15 Summary

The Mayor of Pensacola was treated to an afternoon on the NYYC American Magic chase boat as the team rounded out the month of March with yet another scintillating, high flying session full of technique sailing from Paul Goodison, Tom Slingsby and Riley Gibbs. Speaking afterwards, Trevor gave a superb interview, summing up what American Magic are seeking to achieve on a daily basis: “We’re going through our matrix of different sail setups, different foil setups, looking at the difference between the One Design foil from Team New Zealand and the foil that we've made and how it performs in different conditions… we're going through all the different iterations of windward heel, flat boat with more cant or fully leaned over to windward with the foils a little more under the boat and just seeing what it does for our speed, our VMG in different conditions, different wind speeds, different wave heights all those different variables that go into making the boat go fast.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away.
