How we removed our giant carbon fiber rudder with a hydraulic jack! | Ep. 3

On our sail from New Zealand to Fiji we noticed a leak coming from the rudder shaft so one of the jobs on our to do list is to take out the rudder to inspect the bearing and the seal to see if they need replacing. Our rudder is 3.5m long and made of carbon fiber. It was installed using a hydraulic jack, therefore to remove it, we also have to use the jack. This rudder system isn't very common and we haven't managed to find the designer or technical drawings yet. This made it extremely scary to try to remove, incase we miss something and do damage with the hydraulic jack, which we will be using to apply huge pressure to the rudder and structure of the boat! Watch the video to see if we succeed without damaging the rudder or the boat! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/sailingnv If you don't like Patreon but would like to chip in for a coffee, beer, sand paper or epoxy click here https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Previous videos in this refit series: 01 Can we turn an Open 66 race boat into a fast family cruiser?! https://youtu.be/Hi4re2-dK2w 02 Quadrant glued to rudder post - how do we get it off without damaging everything??! https://youtu.be/TaDgceTS9bU ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts, including sailing half way around the world from Europe to Fiji! Last year we bought an Open 66 ft race sailing boat originally designed and built by the famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He raced her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), coming 5th and becoming the first non-frenchman to finish the race. We’re planning to set sail again in October 2022 , giving us just over a year to turn our dreams into reality and get back on the water! With limited time and money we have plenty of challenges ahead. Subscribe to our channel and track our progress as we release videos showing our transformation of this old gladiator into a performance family cruiser, which we’ll need to make both dog and baby proof! Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!
