How to use the sextant and the sun to know where you are, part 2

Part 2: Finding the exact moment the sun is at its highest ☀️ This is where it gets a bit more precise. It’s not enough to see the sun at the top. It looks like it stays there for a few minutes… but that’s not accurate enough. We need the exact second. So instead of trying to catch that moment directly, I work around it. I take a measurement about an hour before the sun reaches its highest point and lock that angle in the sextant. Then I wait. About an hour after the sun has passed its peak, I measure again without changing the sextant… and wait until the sun comes back to that exact same angle. Now I have two moments in time where the sun was at the same height. The highest point is exactly in the middle of those two times. That’s the moment I need. From there, it’s calculation time… and this is where knowing if I’m east or west really matters.
