How to make a hole in a mast As those of you that follow our channel will know, we’re refitting an Open 60 race boat in Fiji, turning her into a family cruiser to take us around the world. She already has 2 forestays, but one of the changes we wanted to make whilst the mast was down was to add an additional third forestay for multiple reasons. Firstly to give us more easily a larger range of sail configurations, plus it adds extra supports for the mast. Our mast is nearly 30m long and made of carbon fibre and cost a previous owner around 1/4 millions Aussie dollars just over 10 years ago. So the task of making holes in it, for the attachments for these extra stays made us a bit nervous. We constantly cool the area with an air compressor, the carbon and the drill bit, to we reduce the risk of delimitation and damage. Carbon is a difficult material to drill, similar to stainless steel, with the added risk of delimitation. To not heat up the material we bought a drill especially for this job, one which has the ability to regulate the speed to work slowly and that has a lot of power to work under high loads ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts, including sailing half way around the world from Europe to Fiji! Last year we bought an Open 66 ft race sailing boat originally designed and built by the famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa, which he raced in the 1990 Around Alone & 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), becoming the first non-frenchman to finish the race. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water! Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related. Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!
