Also, on average, they eat up to 2.5x their body weight in other fish- every single day! They are so gluttenous, they can even get fatty liver disease and worst of all, wipe out entire reef populations with their overconsumption. They prey upon naive fish who do not recognize them as native predators, however, they also do not recognize humans as native predators either, so it is easy to hunt them and take advantage of their slow speeds! If you're near the ocean, get a hawaiian sling and get out there! In certain areas, eels, sharks, and even grouper wait patiently to steal lionfish off spears. So even if you don't want to eat it, leave it for the creatures out there adapting to prey upon lionfish, who would love the fresh catch.
