How I bought a Beneteau 50 for 11k
Could you really buy a 50-foot Beneteau sailing yacht in the Caribbean for just US$11,000? After Hurricane Beryl tore through Carriacou in 2024, I found myself looking at an opportunity most people would probably walk straight past: a hurricane-damaged Beneteau 50 called *Mamma Mia*. I eventually bought the boat directly from the insurance company for US$11,000. But finding the boat, negotiating the deal and getting it for that price took a lot more than simply turning up with a cheque. In this episode, I explain how I did it — and how you could potentially do something similar. I'll take you through how to find hurricane-damaged boats, make contacts with local boatyards and marina operators, approach insurance companies, assess damaged yachts, negotiate a purchase and avoid some of the expensive mistakes that can turn a bargain into a financial disaster. I'll also explain why helping local communities after a hurricane can be just as important as knowing the right people. Genuine relationships, a bit of hard work and a willingness to help can open doors that money alone won't. **WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:** • Where to look for hurricane-damaged boats in the Caribbean • How to identify potential bargains before and after hurricane season • How to approach boat owners and insurance companies • Why building local contacts can make all the difference • How to assess a damaged yacht before making an offer • What to look out for with salvage operators, boatyards and storage fees • How to negotiate directly and avoid bidding wars • Why volunteering and helping hurricane-affected communities matters • The mistakes I made and the money they cost me • Why the purchase price is only a small part of the real cost • How you could potentially find and buy a hurricane-damaged yacht yourself **ABOUT WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING** What The Hell Am I Doing is an Australian adventure and sailing channel following one bloke's attempts to navigate a world he often knows absolutely nothing about. I'm not a professional sailor, boatbuilder or marine engineer. In fact, I'm quite often a complete novice, hopelessly out of my depth and wondering how on earth I've managed to get myself into the latest predicament. Expect sailing adventures, Caribbean boatyards, dodgy situations, unexpected dramas, spectacular mistakes, plenty of anxiety, a fair bit of Aussie humour and the occasional moment where things actually go right. It's real-life adventure, not a glossy sailing show. There's no guarantee I'll know what I'm doing, but there's usually a good chance something entertaining will happen along the way. If you enjoy honest storytelling, outrageous situations, sailing adventures and watching someone learn the hard way, subscribe and come along for the ride. The boat might have cost me US$11,000 to buy, but that's not the full story. There's a big difference between buying a cheap boat and actually getting it back on the water. And remember: sometimes the best investment you can make in the Caribbean isn't money. It's a helping hand. #HurricaneDamagedBoat #Beneteau50 #CheapSailboats #CaribbeanSailing #BoatSalvage #BuyingABoat #HurricaneBeryl #SailingAdventure #BoatLife #WhatTheHellAmIDoing
