Exploring the Everglades and Charlotte Harbor

This week we take a HUGE step in our lives. We have put in an offer on a house. This one seems to be in much better shape than the last one we liked. Deb and I are excited but trying not to get our hopes up as a lot can change as you go through the process. We took our first step in this video, which was to check the water. We rented a boat and brought out depth sounding sticks. We calibrated the rental boats depth sounder and then went about our tasks or mapping out the depths to the home. Checking depth is a critical step for us as we need to know if the water will work for our big ole' girl. In this case, it seems to work very well in almost all situations. There are going to be some 20-40 days a year where the low tide will not allow us passage out of the canal. But mid-tide to high tide year-round on all days works fine for us. We also decide to go down to the everglades and explore the marshes, grass flats, and mangroves. We see gators, and the girls get to hold one. It was a refreshing experience for one of our first homeschooling outings. The girls got to learn about geography, conservation, and a bit about nature/animals. Chasity wrote a paper on it this week after the trip, so it seemed like a worthwhile outing for sure. Join us on our journey as we continue to rebuild, refit and prepare our Formosa 51 Sailboat for our continued cruising journey. We have always loved the Formosa, bought one (on a bit of a whim) late in 2014, moved aboard this one right away and started to do our refit while living board. We are avid fans of Cruising Outpost and Good Ole Boat (Good Old Boat) magazines and love the ideas we get from them.
