BOUGHT a boat & sailed her home. FIRST sailboat - how does she sail?

Ep 1: Our decision to buy a sailing yacht wasn't an easy one. We'd never owned a boat before and although not novice sailors, the process of selecting the type and style of yacht to suit our purpose was immersive, exciting and daunting. Following our somewhat painful decision to leave work behind us and seek a change of direction, this new project would focus mind and effort on creating a floating home away from home to take us on a new journey. Before heading South and the Long Way Down to the Med through France, we had to get the new addition to our family northward to Yorkshire from Essex. Then the hard work started. The yacht is a Southerly 115, series two built in 1994 by Northshore. The swing keel design allows this boat to sail close hauled with keel fully deployed, run with the wind faster with keel half way up and negotiate shallow water with keel fully retracted into the hull, which also allows drying out on mud banks or beaches - without falling over. We've tested this and confirm it works - but that's another story... This first episode covers the time from buying the boat to her being almost ready for the start of our journey from Yorkshire, through France via Paris, to the Mediterranean Sea.
