We left Ocracoke Island, NC on a beautiful Saturday morning. The sun was shining bright and the water was deceptively calm. As we make our way out to sea, we encounter surfable waves breaking right in the channel! Captain did a great job of navigating Lost Cat, our sailing catamaran, through the rough waters. It was nothing but smooth sailing after that...sort of! We had a successful overnight sail, topping out at 10 knots and holding steady for most of the ride. In the morning, we headed toward the Rudee Inlet near Virgina Beach. The plan was to anchor up at Lake Wesley and get some sleep while we waited for the tides to change. But all sailors know that making plans is a fool's game! There was bad mud at Lake Wesley. The dredging ship near the inlet entrance should have been our first clue that the bottom would be way too squishy for us to hold anchor. So, we departed and headed against the tide to enter the Chesapeake Bay. We found a beautiful anchorage on the Harris River that was surrounded by a natural wildlife refuge. It was so peaceful, we couldn't understand why there weren't other boats anchored there! The next morning, we figured it out... Langley Air Force base, which serves as an Air Service training camp, is located nearby. Every morning, for a few hours, the jets go screaming by! Coming from Texas, we are used to the sound of jets passing over our home, but THIS was a different story. (At one point, I think they were using our boat as a practice target location!) Despite the noise, it was cool to take in free air shows and marvel at the technnology behind the jets and the precision of the pilots. My cousin, Jessica, stopped by and we headed over to nearby Rocky Point Beach to explore and take photos. Jessica is a gifted photographer who owns SaFire Studios, and is well-known for capturing photos of the High-School and College Atheletes of Virginia.
