In this full walkthrough, David steps aboard AKULA, the 59.4-metre explorer yacht delivered by Rossinavi in 2024. After spending time with her owners, he looks at the yacht from a different perspective, focusing on the practical decisions they made when creating a vessel intended to genuinely explore the globe. At 1,241 GT, AKULA has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, a cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 15 knots. Her diesel-electric propulsion system uses four variable-speed generators, with power delivered to 360-degree rotating pods. Her theoretical range at 12 knots is approximately 8,000 nautical miles. AKULA’s many practical details reveal just how carefully she was designed for serious remote cruising. The yacht can produce her own AdBlue, the crew have used the onboard workshop to make zinc anodes, and her expedition tender is tough enough to be driven directly onto beaches and even rocky shores. The same thinking continues throughout the layout and design. There is a dedicated “mudroom” for removing wet or dirty expedition clothing, extensive storage and waste-management facilities, and spaces that can support scientific research. Her red hull and orange detailing were also chosen with visibility in difficult conditions in mind. Inside, Francesca Muzio of FM Architettura has created an interior with its own strong identity. Pressed tobacco leaves, reclaimed high-performance sails, acid-etched steel and industrial details sit alongside the comfort expected of a yacht of this size. Having filmed more than 500 yacht walkthroughs, David describes AKULA as the most remarkable yacht the team has ever been able to film. With her range, Ice Class hull, extensive redundancy and practical approach to life far from conventional cruising grounds, AKULA was built with one clear purpose: to open up the world.
