76 - Samana, Dominican Republic

In this episode Assarain IV sets out from Puerto Real, Puerto Rico, heading to Samana, Dominican Republic. Off the coast of Puerto Rico we responded to a Mayday call of a fishing vessel being pushed offshore with no propulsion, and stayed with the boat until the coast guard arrived on scene. And then the Autopilot quit just before sunset, so we steered the boat by hand all night! Arriving after a night passage in Samana Bay we are greeted by Humpback whales. These whales congregate in the bay in the winter months to raise their young before returning to colder northern waters. After clearing in to the Dominican Republic we hike with our new friends from SY Papaki from the marina into the town of Samana. Boat Work: - Kevin troubleshoots and fixes the autopilot. -the Takacat Dinghy is having some issues. We do a patch of one weak floor area that's leaking. Later we find the glue on the floor is separating along an entire seam. Scuba Diving: we rent a car and set out for a 2-tank dive off Cabo Cabron, Las Galeras. That's it for now.
