Around the world, traditional boats are built without lines planes, using skills and traditions handed down over the generations. The way we build in the west, starting with a skeleton of frames and wrapping them in planks is the exception. The great majority of boat builders start with the planks and put the frames in afterwards. The ways they do this vary greatly from place to place, resulting in a remarkable array of different boat shapes and traditions. This talk will whisk you around the world, comparing and contrasting the different approaches and end up by throwing light on the evolution of boatbuilding in Europe. Gavin French and his adventurous young family sailed away from home and secure jobs in Newfoundland aboard their catamaran.
