The @backscatteruw Monterey Shootout is one of my absolutely favorite things that I have gotten to experience in this little life of mine. The energy, camaraderie and imagery that flow from the 36-hour competition continuously recharge my creative tanks for exploring beneath kelpy seas. Knowing that I would miss this year’s edition due to the unfortunate reality of making ends meet, I held my own personal shootout alongside the bubble buds on my way out of town, taking the six best photos of two dives with a plan to write/shoot/edit a short in a day while at sea. I’m so inspired by the shots that came from the contest; especially the magic that can be concocted with a full embrace of the green machine that is the reality of so many of our dives here in the wonderfully productive Monterey Bay.
