Sail trim is an important part of learning to sail, because left to its own devices, a sail will flap like a flag. We call that luffing. And luffing is not only noisy, it will eventually damage the sail. Also, a luffing sail isn't driving the boat forward. So let’s make it stop by pulling it in. That’s called trimming the sail. To trim the main, pull in the mainsheet. To trim the jib, pull in the leeward jib sheet—the line farther away from the wind. The best wind finder is a nearby flag—or anything that is out in the open, fixed at one edge, and flying free at the other. Flags blow downwind, so if you point from the loose end back to its attachment point, you’ll be pointing into the wind. Before we can go sailing, we need to hoist our sails. That means pulling the sails up so they can fill with wind. First, we find the right halyard (the line or wire that pulls up the sail). Then we attach it, check it runs clear to the top of the mast, and pull until the sail is all the way up.
