Wir lernen, dass das Groß den Gennacker abdeckt. Da eh kaum Wind weht, holen wir das Großsegel wieder runter, wobei eine Schnur des LazyJack reißt. Das Segel liegt chaotisch auf dem Oberdeck und stellt sich bei achterlichem Wind immer wieder auf. Ich krieche über das schwankende Oberdeck und versuche mit einigen Schooten dem Segelknäuel Herr zu werden. Zunächst segeln wir in einer langgezogenen Dünung, dann kommt jedoch Windwelle hinzu. Der Gennacker schlägt bei viel Welle und wenig Wind schrecklich hin und her. Irgendwann ist so wenig Wind, dass wir wieder einmal einen Motor starten. Der Stress aufs Material ist groß. Zweimal bricht die Genuaschoot. Das Fall des Gennackers bricht ebenfalls, sodass wir das neue Segel aufs Trampolin und dann zum Parasailor in die Vorpiek retten müssen. Nun summen wieder einmal die Motoren und verbrauchen Unmengen teuren Diesel. Tagsüber die Backbordmaschine direkt unter unserer Koje und nachts alternativ die Steuerbordmaschine. ► Full test in Multihulls World N°203. ► After its sojourn in La Grande-Motte where it made its world premiere, the Tricat 8.50 #1 returned to Brittany, where we got the opportunity to test it in the Gulf of Morbihan. The program for our trip out between two near-tropical squalls? Beaching on the shoreline and enjoying the thrill of gliding across flat water. Tricat, which has specialized in the under-30-foot folding trimaran sector since 2002, is replacing the valiant 25. Still folding, of course, the new 8.50 is logically much more modern than its predecessor, with an added touch of comfort and agility. The lifting daggerboards are found on the floats, freeing up the central hull. As for the companionway hatch, this has 3 positions and can be fitted with a sprayhood and sun awning. Inside, thanks to double chines, the 8.50 manages to offer rather decent headroom of 6 feet (1.82 m). Ben's shaping the centreline or keel using a traditional tool—an Adze–which, as he describes, is one of, or possibly, the oldest tool used by mankind. With the Adze he's specifically shaping the rebate on the keel, called the 'rabbet', where the garboard plank will sit. Justin, the yard manager at Gweek Quay Classic Boatyard, gives insight into Ben Harris' daring project, pointing out the risks involved and the characteristics needed for success: "At the moment, wood is insanely expensive, so taking a risk with a lot of wood is not going to be done by many people at the moment, that's for sure.".
