► Presented to the public for the first time at the La Rochelle boat show, the Four Winns TH36 equipped with the Foil Assist system was able to make its first “official” outing, and we were on board, of course! Seen from the dock, the aft foil is visible underwater. As for the forward foil, it joins the two hulls at the midships section and also remains submerged, even at high speed. These two foils are fixed and, for the time being, at the end of the prototyping phase, are still mechanically welded and attached in a rather crude manner to bases with watertight casings, so that they can be easily replaced. The next foiling surfaces will be made of aluminum or composites. The vertical reinforcement of the forward foil may be done away with, and the overall hydrodynamics will be optimized. During our tests, the effect of the foils was felt from speeds of 15-18 knots, at which point the powercat starts to “climb”. It was clear of the water for good from 20 knots, at which speed fuel consumption was 25% lower than on the standard TH36. In terms of speed, the readings above 20 knots are those normally obtained with the two Mercury 350 hp models... except that this example was only doted with twin 300s! So, in a way, we gain 100 hp. But what we really like is the TH36's trim stability and, above all, its ability to smoothly absorb waves. Nur einer der Franzosen spricht Englisch, aber unter Wasser sprechen alle Taucher die gleiche Sprache. Während der Tauchgänge lassen wir uns bei auflaufendem Wasser von außen nach innen treiben. Gestartet wird rücklinks vom Schlauchboot. Die Korallen sind generell in den Pässen wegen des strömenden Wassers fantastisch prachtvoll und gesund. Riesige Fischschwärme ziehen vorbei sowie bereits eine ganze Menge Haie. Beim zweiten Tauchgang legen wir uns in eine Höhle und beobachten hunderte oder tausende Haie, die zum Greifen nahe vorbeiziehen. Diesen Tauchgang trage ich als meinen 100. Ins Logbuch ein. Socialising wird groß geschrieben hier in der Hirifia Anchorage im SO von Fakarava. In der Anchorage liegen ca. 20 Yachten mit vielen jungen Leuten, die hier sind, um täglich Kite surfen oder Wing foilen zu gehen. Einige Boote gehören zur hiesigen Kite-Schule. Die Bedingungen sind ideal. Während die Boote geschützt ankern, lockt das flache Wasser nebenan zum stundenlangen Kiten bei kräftigem Wind. Eine Message geht rum und lädt ein zur Floating Dingy Party. Die ersten werfen Anker, die anderen bilden ein buntes Päckchen. Habt Ihr konkrete Fragen? In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. The deck layout is particularly uncluttered, with minimalist helm stations. The weight calculation of around 31,000 lbs (14 t) and the generous sail area (1,840 square feet/171 m² upwind) guarantee excellent performance even in light airs. In rough seas, the 3’3”/1-meter bridgedeck clearance will protect the catamaran from slamming. As for the cutter rig, it guarantees safety and ease of handling offshore.
