Questi segnali speciali non sono da considerare come un aiuto alla navigazione e di solito si usano per indicare particolari zone come aree protette, zone con limiti di velocità, aree di ormeggio o la presenza di cavi e condotte sottomarine, la presenza di idrovore, inclusi tubi di fognatura con sbocco a mare.
