The headsail is the forward most sail, also called a genoa. In harbour, when not being used it is rolled up like a giant sausage around the ‘forestay’ which is a wire that helps to hold the mast up. Unfurling the headsail is where you unroll and open it up so you can use it to sail with. At the start of the 2025 Lightship race, Hana Ho, a Santa Cruz 50, came down and just barely fit between our bow and the stern of the boat in front of them. If we had come down with them and sped up, we'd have closed the gap and put them in an unenviable spot. With 4 minutes left to the gun, it wasn't worth collecting the foul, but boy, this is right on the line between skill and just a dumb move, especially in PHRF where the boats accelerate and decelerate differently.

Trip to the Atlantic Highlands in New Jersey in serious fog. In order to get there, I had to cross New York Harbor. With less than 100m of visibility, not a fun undertaking. There were approximately 20 large vessels all moving at different speeds and heading into the harbor. I never saw one. Without radar it would have been extremely dangerous.
