For centuries sailors have navigated their way across the oceans by celestial navigation or nautical astronomy - using a sextant with the sun, moon, planets, and stars. For the modern sailor, it is essential when crossing oceans as back up to the modern and much relied upon electronic navigation. If you are curious about how to use a sextant or have taken the RYA Yachtmaster or Ocean Theory courses, or are even self-taught, our celestial sailing weekends are ideal offering both an introduction and a refresher. All are welcome. A big advantage is that you learn in a small group, under the supervision of an expert instructor. The weekends involve sailing along the south side of the Isle of Wight and back up through the Needles. A beautiful area to sail whilst offering ample opportunity to practice using the sextant. Power catamarans have twin engines. That makes them much safer than a conventional single engined powerboat. It also makes them very manouverable. Here I am turning our Skoota 28 in circles without using the steering wheel. You can see the engines are in line, turning is achieved by putting one engine in reverse, the other in forward gear I'm not very good at it yet! In part because the engine thrust in forward is much greater than in reverse, (because the exhaust goes through the propeller), so the throttle in forward needs a delicate touch You can build your own Skoota 28 in plywood from plans by Woods Designs, see more at www.sailingcatamarans.com
