For centuries sailors have navigated their way across the oceans by celestial navigation or nautical astronomy - using a sextant with the sun, moon, planets, and stars. For the modern sailor, it is essential when crossing oceans as back up to the modern and much relied upon electronic navigation. If you are curious about how to use a sextant or have taken the RYA Yachtmaster or Ocean Theory courses, or are even self-taught, our celestial sailing weekends are ideal offering both an introduction and a refresher. All are welcome. A big advantage is that you learn in a small group, under the supervision of an expert instructor. The weekends involve sailing along the south side of the Isle of Wight and back up through the Needles. A beautiful area to sail whilst offering ample opportunity to practice using the sextant. Sat at anchor - Don't they ever sleep in this place? #boatlife #greece #sailing We are on the island of Leros sat at anchor in the bay and it's their celebration of the Dormition of the mother of God. Which means they were partying with live music on the quay from 10pm to 6am this morning, and then at around 7am just after we had got to sleep the church bells started ringing. Greek life!
