Maxwell decided to join the burgeoning mid-1920s Long Island Sound Universal Rule R-Class fleet, his Ulster-Scots ancestry took him to William Fife III for the design of FIFI and he had her built relatively locally by the perfectionist, Henry B. Nevins. During seven summers of hard class racing, and many more as a performance cruiser-racer that’s a lot of fun to sail, FIFI’s pedigree stood her in good stead. The inevitable later life deep restoration in current ownership means that FIFI enters her second century as strong if not stronger than her first, and as beautiful as ever.

I colori dell’autunno Oggi il clima a bordo è molto autunnale, sia nel vestiario, sia nel paesaggio, sia nei pensieri. Sarà perché dobbiamo costeggiare il nord di Maiorca e il vento ci soffia sul naso da questa mattina, costringendoci a manovre scomode che allungano le miglia, già di per sè lunghe. Sarà perché questo viaggio ci sta portando a scoprire luoghi preziosi del Mediterraneo. Così delineato, Così ben definito Protetto dalla terra in quasi tutti i suoi lati. Stiamo per compiere un passo importante, quello di abbandonare il conosciuto per l’ignoto. Le coste della Spagna sono sempre le stesse, siamo noi che cambiamo, ogni giorno, ogni miglia, ogni callo e ogni scotta sistemata meglio.
