Step 1 — Introduce the mat Let your dog sniff it, reward any interest. Make it a positive place. Step 2 — Watch for potty signs Sniffing, circling, pacing — that’s your cue. Step 3 — Guide your dog to the mat Every single time. Keep your cue consistent: “go potty”. Step 4 — Reward immediately Praise during, treat right after. This is where the magic happens. Step 5 — Add a scent marker Put a tiny bit of your dog’s own pee on the mat the first days. It helps a lot. Step 6 — Build a routine Take your dog to the mat after sleep, food, play, and excitement. We caught up with Team Loustic SuperSonic waiting out the weather at the John Wayne Marina. They told us all about their hull and deck coming apart. The deck is attached with pop rivets and many of them failed along one side for about two meters of the seam—when they realized the boat was acting sluggish, they looked inside to see at certain tacks, waves of water coming in filling the boat with about 100 gallos of water. They have since repaired it quite nicely and they're drying off all their gear, ready to go on. The boat otherwise handled really well.
