Step 1 â Introduce the mat Let your dog sniff it, reward any interest. Make it a positive place. Step 2 â Watch for potty signs Sniffing, circling, pacing â thatâs your cue. Step 3 â Guide your dog to the mat Every single time. Keep your cue consistent: âgo pottyâ. Step 4 â Reward immediately Praise during, treat right after. This is where the magic happens. Step 5 â Add a scent marker Put a tiny bit of your dogâs own pee on the mat the first days. It helps a lot. Step 6 â Build a routine Take your dog to the mat after sleep, food, play, and excitement.
