In this episode, we continue south along the coast of Northern Norway aboard Polaris, our 46ft liveaboard sailing yacht. With a gale warning due later in the day, we push on early to get across before the weather deteriorates. The sea is lumpy, the wind is unsettled, and Kathrin is still growing her sea legs on our first proper open-water passage of the season. After a cold, wet motor-sail through snow slush and northern swell, we explore a wild anchorage from the Norwegian Cruising Guide, stop for a quick fishing attempt, and head ashore for what was meant to be a moderate hike — but turns into something steeper, wetter, and more demanding than expected. The highlight of the day comes when we meet Skårungen, a 43ft traditional open wooden fishing boat from Fosen Folk School. Her mostly female crew are rowing and sailing 740 nautical miles from Trondheim to Lofoten and back, living cold, damp, and exposed in a way that keeps Norway’s coastal boatbuilding and fishing traditions truly alive. We finish the episode sailing towards Bodø, trying the spinnaker in light following wind before eventually returning to the engine and arriving alongside Skårungen in harbour. Snow on the pontoon, an exposed historic coastal path, and a gale forecast in Lofoten — this episode takes us from the quiet fishing village of Nusfjord to shelter in Ballstad before crossing Vestfjorden. It is late April in northern Norway, and life aboard Polaris is shaped by fast-changing high-latitude spring weather. Before moving the boat, we explore an old working path once used by generations of local fishing communities before roads connected the villages. We expect a short hike, but it quickly becomes more demanding than we thought: snow on the trail, a fixed ladder up a rock face, boulder fields, and exposed sections protected by chains and rope. What we would call a moderate to difficult hike was once part of everyday life — a route shaped by fishing, weather, risk, and patience. After returning to the boat, we head for the protected harbour of Ballstad, a place with centuries of fishing history and a strong connection to Lofoten’s stockfish tradition. With gale-force winds, rain, and snow in the forecast, we prepare Polaris for a rough couple of days in harbour before waiting for a calmer window to cross Vestfjorden towards Nordskot. In this episode, we continue our Arctic sailing adventure aboard Polaris, cruising through Lofoten in Northern Norway. We sail deeper into northern Norway, timing a tidal gate, navigating narrow fairways, refuelling in a shallow harbour, anchoring in a wild bay, and finally entering the spectacular Trollfjord by sailboat. In this episode of Sailing Polaris, we leave early in the morning to catch the current through one of the few tidal gates on our route. With up to three knots of tide helping us along, we follow a narrow and shifting fairway used by larger vessels, where the charted depths may not always match reality. After arriving in Lødingen, we manoeuvre Polaris, our 46ft Bavaria sailing yacht, into a small and shallow harbour to refuel. What looks tight and questionable on the charts turns out to be manageable in calm conditions, although the diesel price is another matter. From there, we continue towards a remote anchorage among skerries, rocks and northern wildlife. The next morning brings a calm and protected anchorage, a scenic route through narrow channels, and a perfect weather window for a long-awaited bucket-list destination: Trollfjord. With flat seas, blue sky, snow-covered mountains, falling-rock warnings and an eagle overhead, Trollfjord feels both beautiful and severe. But northern Norway still sets the limits. Deep spring snow and avalanche risk force Catherine to turn back from planned hikes, leaving us with unfinished business in this dramatic Arctic landscape. After a long Arctic winter in Finnsnes, it is finally time to slip the lines and begin a new sailing season in Northern Norway. Join us aboard Polaris for the final chapter of an unforgettable sailing season in Arctic Norway. In this episode, we cruise from Bjarkøy towards Finnsnes, navigating narrow shallow channels, tidal currents, fishing buoys, low clearance cables and shifting autumn winds along the Norwegian coast. We visit the beautiful island of Bjarkøy, once an important Viking centre, explore the harbour, forage for porcini mushrooms and witness the first Northern Lights of the season — a clear sign that winter is closing in fast. After a long and intense sailing year covering around 2,400–2,500 nautical miles, including adventures to Svalbard, the Norwegian coast, Tromsø and the Lofoten and Senja region, it is time to prepare Polaris for the harsh northern winter. We winterise the engine and generator with glycol, remove solar panels, protect the boat from snow and freezing temperatures, insulate the windows, drain the water system and set up remote monitoring to keep the boat safe through temperatures as low as -20°C. In this episode of our Arctic sailing adventure, we continue through the spectacular islands of Vesterålen in Northern Norway aboard our sailing vessel Polaris. With light winds on the nose, we motor from Stø towards Skipnes, passing quiet harbours, rugged mountains and late-season coastal landscapes. In Skipnes, the main season is already over. The harbour is calm, the hotel seems closed, but we still find a cold beer and a perfect end to a sunny day. The next morning, we leave Polaris behind and walk towards Tinden, an old fishing village and trading post. What looks like a short and easy hike turns into a wet, swampy trail, even after a long dry spell. Tinden itself feels almost deserted out of season, but the smell of fresh paint shows that someone is still caring for this historic place. From there we continue to Skårvågen. The following morning brings thick fog over the harbour and coast, making navigation through the rock-strewn waters unappealing. Instead, we hike up Skårvågfjellet, 403 metres above sea level, rising above the fog into blue sky. As the weather changes and time runs short, we adjust our plans, leave the idea of Trollfjord behind, and set a shorter course towards Sortland. After weeks exploring the remote wilderness of Svalbard, it is finally time to begin the long journey south. In this episode of Expedition Svalbard, we sail more than 550 nautical miles across the Barents Sea on our return passage from the High Arctic back to Tromsø in northern Norway. The voyage home is a careful balance of sailing and motoring as we work with changing Arctic weather conditions. Long watches, fuel calculations and shifting wind forecasts shape each decision on board as we guide our sailing yacht steadily south towards mainland Norway. At times the sea is glassy calm and we motor gently through the Arctic waters. At other moments the wind builds and we reef the sails as the boat surges forward at speed. Dolphins, whales and vast open horizons accompany us along the way as we leave the islands of Svalbard behind. While the miles pass beneath the keel, we reflect on the extraordinary places we experienced during the expedition — drifting icebergs, remote polar landscapes and rare wildlife such as walrus and polar bears. We also visited the unique communities that exist in this harsh environment, including Longyearbyen, Barentsburg and the historic research station of Ny-Ålesund. The return voyage is both demanding and reflective. After 33 days away, sailing back into the familiar waters of Tromsø marks the end of an unforgettable Arctic expedition. In this episode of our Arctic sailing documentary, we explore the dramatic fjords and remote anchorages of Svalbard. From Ny Ålesund we navigate into Kongsfjorden towards the imposing front of Kronebreen, carefully assessing drifting ice and the possibility of uncharted shallows as we approach the glacier. At Peirsonhamna anchorage, we maintain an ice watch as icebergs drift through the bay, testing our anchoring strategy and Arctic seamanship. We even attempt to move a drifting bergy bit with the dinghy to better understand the scale and force of these frozen masses. Ashore, we visit the historic marble mining remains of Ny London, founded by Ernest Mansfield’s Northern Exploration Company in 1911. Rusting machinery, abandoned railway tracks and weathered cabins stand as stark reminders of early industrial ambition in the High Arctic. In Ny Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost settlements, our friend Linda guides us through its history — from coal mining town to international Arctic research hub. We see the historic telegraph station and the mooring mast used for Roald Amundsen’s 1926 North Pole airship expedition. Continuing south, we sail into Tempelfjorden and anchor at Bionahamna beneath the striking sedimentary formations of Temple Mountain. We approach Tunabreen glacier in calm conditions, capturing Polaris against the vast Arctic ice landscape. Sailing in Svalbard brought us face to face with a walrus and a polar bear in the High Arctic. Polaris and her crew reach one of the most remote outposts in the Arctic: Bjørnøya (Bear Island). Welcome aboard Polaris as we launch into a brand-new Arctic sailing season! 🧭 In this episode, we kick off with a quick check dive in icy one-degree water to inspect the hull and replace anodes after more than a year in the water. From there, we set off from Skjervøy toward Hammerfest, navigating calm fjords, narrow tidal sounds, and a sea full of king crab pots. Along the way, we round the iconic North Cape (Nordkapp) in perfect weather — a highlight of any Arctic voyage — and stop in Honningsvåg, the town closest to the Cape. There, we climb the famous Nordtrappa, a thousand-step granite staircase built by Nepalese Sherpas, offering panoramic views over the Arctic Ocean.
