Time to upgrade the anchor setup on Marisa. ⚓ In this video, I replace the old anchor chain with a new one, measure it before installation, and set everything up properly for safer anchoring. In this video I carry out a full service on my Yanmar 3JH2E boat engine aboard my sailboat, a Hunter Legend 376 What started as a simple maintenance job quickly turned into one of those typical boat days… where nothing goes exactly as planned. In today’s video, I replace the engine battery on the boat and walk you through the full process step by step. What should be a simple job on land is never quite that simple on a boat. From disconnecting the old battery to securing the new one properly so it won’t move in rough conditions, everything requires extra care. A loose battery at sea is not an option. After installation, we check the charging voltage to make sure everything is working correctly — and we’re getting a healthy 14.27V, so the alternator is doing its job. Along the way, I also talk about another postponed project: replacing the marine waterproof carpets. After checking prices, I decided that for now it’s better to clean and maintain what I have and prioritize more important mechanical investments. In this video I share my personal experience comparing boat ownership in Spain and the United Kingdom — from registration, licences and insurance, to marinas, costs, salvage services and anchoring. This is not a technical or legal breakdown, but a practical comparison based on what I’ve personally experienced over the years. There are clear philosophical differences between both countries when it comes to regulation, responsibility and freedom — and that’s what I explore here. That said, this is only my opinion. I don’t have anywhere near the knowledge required to cover every aspect of this topic in depth. For example, I don’t know the anchorages in the south of England, which I understand are also excellent. The Scottish anchorages I’m familiar with are only being compared to the Mediterranean areas I know personally. I’m also aware that there are regions in Spain — such as Galicia — where anchoring conditions are much more similar to what we have here in the UK. So please take this video as a personal perspective, not a definitive guide. I would genuinely love to hear your thoughts in the comments. En este episodio dejamos atrás Strangford Lough, un lugar espectacular pero técnicamente exigente, donde las mareas, corrientes y la planificación previa son clave para una navegación segura. Antes de la salida se produce la pérdida del dron, consecuencia de una cadena de pequeños errores de coordinación y comunicación a bordo. Una situación evitable que sirve como recordatorio de lo rápido que pueden complicarse las cosas cuando se mezclan tareas, espacios reducidos y falta de preparación. Analizamos la salida del lough, el momento elegido para aprovechar la corriente, y cómo interactúa con las fuertes corrientes del North Channel rumbo al Belfast Lough. También mostramos cómo, incluso con el mar aparentemente en calma, una mala decisión de timing puede cambiarlo todo. Además, hago un análisis detallado del atraque, revisando varios errores menores que, combinados, generaron una situación innecesariamente arriesgada. En este episodio zarpamos desde Bangor rumbo a uno de los lugares más impresionantes —y desafiantes— del litoral de Irlanda del Norte: Strangford Narrows, famoso por sus mareas extremas que pueden superar los 8 nudos. Aprovechamos cada cambio de corriente para avanzar hacia el sur por la costa de la península de Ards y llegar en el momento clave: cuando la marea empieza a llenar el Strangford Lough. Un cálculo que, si falla, convierte la entrada en un verdadero infierno para cualquier velero. Pero lo más intenso llega al final: el atraque. Con las corrientes empujando fuerte en los narrows, tenemos que abarloarnos junto al velero de nuestros amigos Cándida, en una maniobra donde cada segundo cuenta. Una mezcla de tensión, agua acelerada y muy poco margen de error. El episodio termina en la pequeña y encantadora villa de Strangford, donde el ferry a Portaferry marca el ritmo de la vida diaria y las mareas lo gobiernan todo. Después de dos increíbles semanas navegando por la costa oeste de Escocia, ha llegado el momento de traer a Marisa de vuelta a casa, a la Marina de Bangor. Zarpamos de Glenarm bajo un cielo gris y algo melancólico; la tripulación disfruta de una última travesía tranquila — mar en calma, casi sin viento y esa sensación agridulce del final de nuestra aventura de verano. Pero, como siempre… ¡las cosas no salen exactamente como estaba previsto! 😅 Desde entrenar a los tripulantes más jóvenes en la guardia, hasta volar el dron junto a los impresionantes acantilados de Islandmagee y The Gobbins, todo parece perfecto… hasta que volvemos a Bangor. Un “encuentro cercano” en el pantalán de combustible nos recuerda que un viaje en velero no termina hasta que las amarras están bien sujetas. El viento se sitúa a popa y lleva al Marisa con paso firme hacia Irlanda —la isla que nuestra tripulación llama con orgullo su hogar. Nuestro destino: el encantador pueblo de Glenarm. Para muchos, no es más que un pequeño puerto con una marina… pero para los navegantes, es una parada estratégica clave entre Escocia e Irlanda.
