In this video, I’m working on a DIY upgrade for my boat's solar panel mounting system. The goal is to move from a temporary setup to something more permanent and versatile that allows me to tilt the panels for better efficiency while living at anchor on Marisa. Using some stainless steel bars I had on hand, I've managed to create a much more stable and adjustable structure. It’s a quick and practical project that makes a big difference when the sun isn't perfectly positioned. Heading out for an overnight anchor testing out some new DIY gadgets on Marisa! ⚓⛵ In this episode, we leave Bangor Marina behind and head over to Ballyholme Bay for a quick overnight getaway. We wanted to test our current setup, build up some confidence anchoring close to home, and push our onboard power to the test. You'll see how our solar panel performed (we even managed to watch some TV!), check out my latest "low-cost" DIY inventions using a mop handle and some hoses to wash down the anchor chain, and find out what's currently happening with the management transition at Bangor Marina between Boatfolk and the Ards and North Down Borough Council. We are heading back to Belfast, but this isn't just another sailing trip. Today is deeply personal. After four years of silence, I’m finally heading toward a long-awaited conversation to set things right and fix what was broken. But as every sailor knows, the sea has its own plans. Our approach to Belfast gets intense when a massive tugboat overtakes us at high speed, creating a dangerous wake that really puts Marisa and the crew to the test. Should there be stricter maritime regulations for commercial vessels in narrow channels? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Join us for this journey of emotional closures, technical docking maneuvers, and the beauty of the Northern Irish coast. Welcome back to Sailing Marisa! In this episode, I'm diving into my first major solar energy project. I'm installing a rigid solar panel on the sailboat's guardrail to increase our energy independence while at anchor. It wasn't easy! From missing drill bits and high winds in the marina to a classic rookie mistake that left me with ZERO solar output for a moment—I'm sharing all the ups, downs, and drama of this DIY project. Learn how I routed the cables from the deck to the house battery, installed the solar charge controller (MPPT), added an essential disconnect switch for safety, and tweaked the mounting system for maximum sun exposure. I also address a common question: Is this channel monetized? (Spoiler: Not yet! It's still a labor of love!). Whether you're looking for practical solar installation tips for your own boat or just enjoy the honest reality of sailboat maintenance, this episode has something for you. 🔧 Gear Used in This Episode: Note: I have NO affiliation or partnership with any of these brands. Time to upgrade the anchor setup on Marisa. ⚓ In this video, I replace the old anchor chain with a new one, measure it before installation, and set everything up properly for safer anchoring. I also show how I connect the chain to the rope (warp) with a splice, and finally secure the bitter end correctly — something that definitely needed improvement on the original setup. 👉 In this video: Replacing the old anchor chain Measuring before installation Chain-to-rope splice (chain + warp) Securing the bitter end properly Small upgrades that make a big difference when anchoring Simple jobs like this can massively improve safety and confidence when dropping the anchor. ⚓ Sailing Marisa — real sailing, practical upgrades, and life onboard. 👍 Like & subscribe if you enjoy real boat work and sailing content! 00:00 New chain for Marisa 00:16 Measuring the new chain 03:00 Marking the chain 04:36 Chain-to-rope splice (chain + warp) 08:05 – Removing the old anchor chain 16:04 the bitter end 17:43 installng the new chain 24:16 END 🔥 HASHTAGS #SailingLife #BoatMaintenance #AnchorChain #Anchoring #SailingTips #BoatProjects #Liveaboard #SailingChannel #BoatLife #CruisingLife #DIYBoat #SailingMarisa #OceanLife #SailboatLife #MarineDIY #HUNTERLEGEND Special thanks to @konikoni123 Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFuWfLVgIBL6JzolbRqefXw/join

Join me for a winter solo sailing session in Northern Ireland! We start in the engine room, finishing up some maintenance by changing the alternator belt—which turned out to be a bit of a struggle. Once the engine was ready, I couldn't resist heading out to sea to test some gear. In this episode, I’m testing a remote for the autopilot kindly fixed by David from @lowcostsailor and checking the plotter. You’ll see the challenges of hoisting sails solo, dealing with snags, and performing a "chicken jibe" (tacking instead of jibing) when the gusts got too hairy. Finally, we navigate a tricky docking maneuver at the fuel dock, dealing with prop wash and the massive Queen of Ulster blocking the way. 00:00 Engine maintenance: The alternator belt struggle 02:07 Why it's a "sin" not to sail in Ireland today 02:46 Testing the remote autopilot and plotter 04:19 Casting off solo from the marina 07:57 Shoutout to David (TheLowCostSailor) 08:42 Hoisting the main and Genoa (Solo challenges) 12:10 Troubleshooting a snagged line 15:04 Dealing with gusts: The "Chicken Jibe" 18:23 Dropping sails 25:12 Tricky docking: Prop wash vs. The Queen of Ulster 30:08 Wrapping up at the fuel dock #SoloSailing #SailboatMaintenance #Ireland #SailingVlog #SoloSailor #boatlife #Hunterlegend376 #hunter376 Special thanks to @konikoni123 Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFuWfLVgIBL6JzolbRqefXw/join

In this video I carry out a full service on my Yanmar 3JH2E boat engine aboard my sailboat, a Hunter Legend 376 What started as a simple maintenance job quickly turned into one of those typical boat days… where nothing goes exactly as planned. During this service I change the engine oil, oil filter, diesel fuel filters, and bleed the diesel system before starting the engine again. If you own a Yanmar marine diesel engine, this is a real-life look at basic maintenance you’ll eventually need to do on your boat. In this episode, I tackle a full cooling system service on my boat engine — starting with the raw water (seawater) side, and finishing with the coolant system. What started as “just a quick visit” to the boat turned into: Replacing raw water hoses Flushing the seawater cooling circuit Replacing exhaust hoses Draining the coolant Emptying the water heater lines Refilling and topping up the cooling system All of this while working full-time and preparing for a work trip to Amsterdam. This is real boat ownership — not a marina fantasy. Things take time. Access is tight. Nothing is ever just five minutes. If you own a sailboat or powerboat with an inboard diesel engine, this is a real-world look at maintaining both sides of the cooling system: The raw water (sea) circuit The closed-loop coolant system Step by step. After work. Bit by bit. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 The plan: full cooling system service 01:04 Replacing raw water hoses 03:59 Flushing the seawater system 05:52 Exhaust hose replacement 11:15 First engine test – checking water flow 14:57 Draining the coolant 17:23 Emptying water heater lines 20:03 Refilling the cooling system 21:38 Quick interior trim replacement 22:49 What’s next: oil, diesel & belt 🔧 WHAT’S NEXT Engine oil change Diesel filter replacement Belt replacement Final engine run & coolant level check #BoatMaintenance #BoatEngine #MarineDiesel #RawWaterCooling #CoolingSystem #BoatLife #SailingLife #DIYBoat #ExhaustHose #EngineService #BoatOwnership Special thanks to Xavi Villanueva Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFuWfLVgIBL6JzolbRqefXw/join

In today’s video, I replace the engine battery on the boat and walk you through the full process step by step. What should be a simple job on land is never quite that simple on a boat. From disconnecting the old battery to securing the new one properly so it won’t move in rough conditions, everything requires extra care. A loose battery at sea is not an option. After installation, we check the charging voltage to make sure everything is working correctly — and we’re getting a healthy 14.27V, so the alternator is doing its job. Along the way, I also talk about another postponed project: replacing the marine waterproof carpets. After checking prices, I decided that for now it’s better to clean and maintain what I have and prioritize more important mechanical investments. There’s plenty of winter work ahead: Full engine maintenance Possible exhaust hose replacement Cleaning the exhaust elbow Replacing the anchor chain due to corrosion Boat life means constant maintenance, but every small job done properly brings peace of mind. Special thanks to Xavi Vilanueva for the support and collaboration. I just discovered that my chain is divided into two types, one larger than the other, and that the materials must be different because the joining point shows a lot of corrosion. In this video I share my personal experience comparing boat ownership in Spain and the United Kingdom — from registration, licences and insurance, to marinas, costs, salvage services and anchoring. This is not a technical or legal breakdown, but a practical comparison based on what I’ve personally experienced over the years. There are clear philosophical differences between both countries when it comes to regulation, responsibility and freedom — and that’s what I explore here. That said, this is only my opinion. I don’t have anywhere near the knowledge required to cover every aspect of this topic in depth. For example, I don’t know the anchorages in the south of England, which I understand are also excellent. The Scottish anchorages I’m familiar with are only being compared to the Mediterranean areas I know personally. I’m also aware that there are regions in Spain — such as Galicia — where anchoring conditions are much more similar to what we have here in the UK. So please take this video as a personal perspective, not a definitive guide. I would genuinely love to hear your thoughts in the comments. If you have experience boating in Spain, England, Scotland, Wales or elsewhere, please share it. Let’s use the comments to learn from each other and build a broader, more complete picture.
