The big moment has arrived – a complete electrical overhaul of my 27ft Grinde Loveworkx! In this episode, Frank Ooms completely rebuilds the entire electrical system. He removes all the old, messy wiring, installs new solar panels with MPPT controllers, fits a brand new battery bank, and neatly mounts the IridiumGo. Everything is done with a professional cable plan and detailed parts list and manual, resulting in a clean, reliable and safe system ready for the open ocean. This was a major job Frank did for me just before I set off on my solo world voyage. I’m sailing from Almere toward Lemmer in The Netherlands – the town where my love for sailing started when I was just ten years old. Now I’m back with my 27ft Grinde Loveworkx, ready for the next big chapter: my solo circumnavigation. I moor at Zeilmakerij De Vries Maritiem, the same place where I once worked at the reception desk. Today they’re making a brand new sprayhood, a rain-catching cover for the tropics, a dinghy cover, and even a cockpit hammock for better watch-keeping. As part of my preparation for my solo sail around the world I went to a professional Sea Survival Training. The most intense moment? Being locked inside a car, dropped into the water and flipped 180 degrees – total disorientation, heart pounding, learning to stay calm and escape. Later we faced a full storm simulation in darkness with wind, thunder and waves. We finished in open water testing life jackets and group survival techniques. This day was far more than theory – it was about facing fear, trusting yourself and preparing for the unexpected. One huge step closer to my solo circumnavigation. In October 2020, I bought my Grinde — but the story began when I was eighteen, sailing this Danish 27-footer across the IJsselmeer. Designed in 1976 by Peter Bruun, the Grinde is wide for her length, solidly built, and carries deep ballast. She isn’t sleek or fashionable. She’s built like a whale — full, steady, powerful. When the dream of sailing around the world began to take shape, one question kept returning: Can I really do this in a 27-foot boat? Instead of figuring it out alone, I organized a Grinde weekend in Enkhuizen. Owners sailed in from across the Netherlands. We compared boats, shared modifications, talked about heavy weather, ballast, rigging, and offshore experience. What started as a small gathering is now a growing annual meetup — a place where knowledge and stories are exchanged openly. Standing there, surrounded by these boats, I realized something important: The real limit is rarely the boat. It’s what we believe about the boat. With 25–30 knots of wind, sailing toward Den Helder and out onto the North Sea toward IJmuiden no longer felt wise. So we changed the plan and turned this into a different kind of weekend adventure. Instead, we head for the Marker Wadden, a unique new nature reserve in the Netherlands. To get there, we pass through the Naviduct in Enkhuizen—one of only two naviducts in the world, where cars pass under the water while boats sail above. ❄️⛸️⛵ Today I take you to three of my absolute favourite winter places in the Netherlands: Naardermeer, Gouwzee and Marina Muiderzand in 2021. With the rare big freeze, these lakes and bays are completely covered in thick ice – something that happens less and less often. Watch families skating, children racing, long elegant strokes… and then the real spectacle: ice sailors (ijszeilers) flying across the frozen surface on their boats with metal runners, reaching incredible speeds! From the peaceful beauty of Naardermeer, to the fast ice yachts zooming over the Gouwzee, to the quiet, snowy pontoons at Marina Muiderzand – these moments feel like stepping back in time to the classic Dutch winters. 🌊 Code Red hits Marina Muiderzand! Looking back to the early start of my preparations for my circumnavigation in 2021. Wind force 8, heavy snow, and temperatures dropping to -8°C. I head out to check on Grinde Loveworkx, clear snow, install a small portable heater, and winterize everything: antifreeze in the toilet, engine, sinks, and seacocks.
